Taken by the Sorcerer by Megan Slayer #Paranormal #UrbanFantasy @ChangelingPress

She’s never been taken seriously. He’s seen as a geek. Together, they could be unstoppable.

Skylar Graves is a synth -- she can shift into anything. She’s also known all around the world as a billionaire playgirl fool. Parties? She’s had them. Money? Bucketloads. Brains… Well, there’s the rub. No one’s ever believed she had the brains to make the money. No one’s ever believed in her at all.

Enter Brody and a reason to use those brains.

Brody isn’t the best sorcerer. He knows his spells and how to create them, but he’s still learning to control his magic. When he finds his perfect mate, he’ll be set. But is she out there? The trouble is, he’s been tasked with helping other paras find Eerie and he can’t do that alone.

The mome he meets Skylar, he knows he’s found his match, but the problem lies in convincing her she’s more than she ever believed.

Not impossible… right?

EXCERPT

“I am getting into this party.” Brody Teague drove up the winding road to the gravel area at the base of the Skylar Graves property. The music blared and vibrated the ground, even this far out. He hated loud noise and didn’t really want to be here, but he needed to speak to Skylar.

He just knew she was a para and could help him. He knew it.

Still, he couldn’t hide his irritation. How did one woman have so much ridiculous wealth? This wasn’t just opulence, but obnoxious opulence. He’d bet the people attending this party spent more on one pair of shoes than he did on his rent for the month.

Right now, he needed to speak to her. What would she say if she knew she was meeting a true sorcerer who wanted her help? She’d probably laugh. If she helped him, he could develop his potion to allow paras to move in regular society, and also concoct the signal to help paras who didn’t even know they were para to find refuge in Eerie. He knew there were more people out there who could come to the town and find a place to exist and understand their abilities, if they had the signal to get there.

He left his car and trudged the last few hundred yards up the road to the main gate. The number of cars parked every which way in his path amazed him. How were these people going to leave? They’d need choreography or a cop to help them.

Didn’t matter to him. He wasn’t going to be there when they left. He’d get in, give his pitch, hope for the best, and get the hell out of there. He walked up to the gate and admired the wrought iron. The doors swung loose, allowing him onto the property. He’d bet this gate was locked up tight any other time. He touched the iron and the chill settled in his bones. The gate was spooky, really. It looked like a cartoony alien in the middle.

Aliens… He knew they existed, but they didn’t look like the Roswellian versions. They were much more like humans than the actual humans believed. But aliens were good at morphing and shifting to fit their environment.

As he walked among the people having conversations and dancing, he realized he shouldn’t be there. He wasn’t dressed for the occasion. He’d never seen so much purple in his life. People danced by the pool, swaying and gyrating. The men tended to be dressed in suits and tuxedos. The women wore evening gowns. The plethora of sequins caught the light. Glasses clinked and laughter rang out. The music blared even louder and the water seemed to thrum with the beat.

Would anyone notice him? Somehow, he doubted it.

He spied the buffet of food. Every fruit and veggie possible for a tray were spread out on the table, along with a chocolate fountain and a stack of glasses, no doubt filled with champagne. He’d bet it was the most expensive bubbly, at that.

There were people at the side table with powder that might or might not be drugs. He forced himself away from that area. He’d never had a problem with drugs or wanted to try them but didn’t judge anyone who did.

He fought the urge to cover his ears. The noise bothered him. He was a scientist and sorcerer. He needed to concentrate. This place didn’t allow him to do that. He could barely focus.

He scanned the various people at the party and shook his head. She wasn’t there. He’d know Skylar in a heartbeat. Then again, she was about the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Silky blonde hair, willowy and tall, a few curves, and kissable lips. He wanted to look into her brown eyes and get lost.

He balled his hand and gritted his teeth. Damn it. He wasn’t there to drool over her. He was there to ask a question.

Brody focused on the money spent to not only throw the party, but to have this house and lifestyle. The paintings weren’t photos or pictures printed on canvas, but actual works of art. Was that a Picasso? Nah. He tipped his head. Well, maybe. She had the money to buy whatever she wanted, so it was plausible.

He couldn’t imagine having that much cash. He’d barely scraped by all his life. But by being poor, he’d learned how to use what he had and make it stretch to work for his needs. It taught him to be humble, too.

A woman in a blood red body-hugging gown grabbed him. “Look at you. Are you one of the dancers?” She yanked him close and kissed him right on the mouth. “You sure taste good.”

He wriggled in her grasp. “I’m not a dancer.” He had two left feet. “Sorry.”

“Then stay with me.” She tugged him across the expanse of lawn toward the pool. “She brought a few newbs. This one’s right off the farm.”

He managed to disengage himself from her and darted back to the safety of the bigger crowd on the veranda. Why anyone thought they had the right to force themselves on someone else was beyond him. She’d touched him without his permission. Gross.

He didn’t know that woman and was sure she wasn’t a para. Hell, she’d probably slash his ass if she found out he was one. Would they turn on Skylar when they found out she was one? If she was one…

He rested his hands on his hips and surveyed the crowd again. If she’d used some of her money to help paras and not buy another sports car, she’d be a folk hero. There were plenty of paras who needed a hand in getting to Eerie and more who could use help in figuring out what their magic might be.

But she’d chosen to be decadent.

He moved through the people again, looking for her. Nope, she wasn’t there. He’d never forget her hair or smile.

A woman with bright red hair bumped into him, but he doubted she knew he was there.

“I hear she’s a para,” the woman said. “I don’t know how. She’s so normal.”

What a reductive thing to say. He kept his back to her but continued to listen.

“Doesn’t surprise me,” the woman with her said. “She’s a freak. I mean, how else could she have this kind of money and do absolutely nothing? It’s supposed to be her father’s money, but has anyone ever seen him? No. He doesn’t exist. I bet she stole it or it’s created money.”

Judgmental much? He rolled his eyes, then resumed looking through the crowd.

“Think she really is manufacturing the money?” the first woman said.

“Nah,” the other woman replied. “It’s just a way for her to get attention. She’s probably got a dead husband or ex that she bled dry financially.”

“She is an attention-grabber.”

He hated that these people who’d been invited to the party -- or maybe they’d crashed it like he had -- so openly dismissed her. Like she didn’t have feelings or didn’t matter and wasn’t a person. So rude.

Still, he wasn’t so thrilled with Skylar. He wished she’d donate her money or time back to Eerie to help the para community. Paras were dying from harm coming to them via the human and outside world. Vampires were staked for being different. Faeries slaughtered for making magic. Trolls and gnomes killed for being perceived as ugly. It wasn’t right.

A golden eagle soared into the space and flew right past him. The bird seemed to keep circling him.

“Go,” he muttered. “I’m not dinner. Shoo.” Why was this eagle focusing on him? He wobbled. Shit. Was it trained to find the crashers? Could be. He wanted to use a spell to get the fuck out of there, but he’d have to return to get his car. Goddamn it.

The bird flew around him again, then soared across the expanse and landed on the upright next to the DJ stand.

The DJ stopped the music. “And there is Skylar Graves’ famous pet eagle. Who else but Skylar would have an eagle as a pet? So majestic and graceful. But watch out. She has a nasty bite! Let’s give it up for Audra, her eagle!”

The crowd cheered and the eagle soared out of the way, behind the second floor of the mansion.

He groaned. What a ridiculous show of extravagance. It displayed her wealth, sure, but it was a waste of money. The bird should be in the wild or a zoo, where it could be appreciated and admired. Not stuck in a damn mansion with a woman who had more money than brains.

He snorted to himself. Good God, he was being harsh and judgmental.

“Is she here?” someone asked.

“She’s having a party and doesn’t care to show up,” another said. “She’s probably out of the country. She’s never here.”

“I bet we could rob this place blind and she’d never know,” a third person said.

“Except she’s got the best security system. This place is protected better than government vaults,” another voice said. “Don’t try it. This joint will scream and lock down in seconds.”

Brody gritted his teeth again. She had to be there. He had no choice. People were discussing robbing her and belittling her… just like he had. Damn it.

He bowed his head. He had to think about her as a person and para, not a source of money. That’s how they all saw her -- a reflection of her disposable income. She lived her life like nothing mattered. It was all a big party. She didn’t command respect.

Then again, he didn’t exactly command it, either. He did better behind the scenes. Let him stay in his lab with his medicines and potions. There he was fine. All he wanted to do was help his fellow paras.

“Excuse me.” A woman tugged his arm and yanked him out of the main space and behind a curtain.

“What the?” He stared at her. He’d never seen anyone with golden brown eyes. They were transfixing. But she’d grabbed him. “What do you want?”

“You.”

He couldn’t look away from her. Most of her face was concealed behind a black, feathery mask. He could swear he knew her, but he couldn’t place her.

“I need to speak to you.” She held onto him. “Do you know Skylar?”

DANINE by Alice Gene #RomCom #UrbanFantasy @changelingpress

Michael has enrolled at The Familiar Training Academy to be paired with the familiar who’ll be at his side for life. Only, the Academy has chosen to put him with their problem child. And he’s supposed to teach her obedience?

Danine hangs out with wild raccoons and has no intention of taking orders. But Michael makes the bond so sweet, she has to stick around for more. When a class project gets her lost in a charmed forest, will he find her?

EXCERPT

For some reason, the administrator was nervous. As a brand-new student, Michael Bedford should have been the anxious one. After all, he was entering the Familiar Training Academy as a rank amateur sorcerer. The coursework would test even the brightest students, and he’d have to take charge of a familiar.

As of right now, he had no idea what sort of person they’d linked him to. And not just person. His familiar would also be a shifter… able to change into an animal. She could be any species at all, and within minutes of meeting her, he’d have to bond with her physically.

No pressure there, right? Wrong. He was going to have to perform with a perfect stranger. He’d never had a problem in that area, but this was different. In fact, he’d been looking forward to it ever since he’d received the acceptance letter from the Academy. How they got along now would color the rest of their time together, probably until one of them died.

“Um.” The administrator cleared his throat. “We’ve sent folks to find Danine. She should be here any minute.”

“Can you tell me more about her?” Like what kind of creature he’d be taking to bed as soon as she arrived.

“Danine is… well… special to all of us,” the administrator said.

“How special?”

“Bear in mind, our selection was based on quantitative measures of your personality and needs,” the man said. “Highly scientific.”

Something was definitely off here. The man was dodging Michael’s questions. Had their measurements paired him with something truly unpalatable? Maybe a banana slug or dung beetle. Maybe something dangerous like one of those frogs indigenous people used to make poison for their darts. If he licked her at the wrong time, he might end up dead. Or stoned out of his mind.

“Let’s try this another way,” Michael said. “Is she animal, vegetable, or mineral?”

“Ha-ha. Good one.” The man fidgeted with his pen. “She’s definitely animal.”

Brother. At least they were narrowing it down. “Mammal or marsupial? Feline? Canine? Ungulate? She’s not venomous, is she?”

Laughter again, this time high pitched. “Not at all, and she’s had all her shots.” The man continued to laugh, this time at his own joke. It hadn’t been all that funny.

“Then, we’re talking mammal,” Michael said.

“I must stress that you are the sorcerer here and she the familiar. She needs to obey you. Obedience in all things.” Michael had never expected a woman to obey him. If he was lucky, a woman might agree with him, but in his experience, trying to boss a woman around was only asking for trouble.

“Oh, my.” The man checked his watch. “She knew she was supposed to meet you twenty minutes ago. Where is she?”

“Maybe I should come back at another time.” And miss out on bonding, at least for now. Damn it. He’d counted on settling into his rooms here with some really good sex. As long as he didn’t have to do it with a banana slug.

Finally, a scratching came at the window, like claws against the glass. The administrator looked in that direction. “Well, here she is now.”

Michael glanced over to find a raccoon balanced precariously on the windowsill. It continued to swipe at the glass with its paws. The administrator got up, went to the window, and opened it with some effort. The buildings were old here, and no doubt things got stuck.

“Where have you been?” the administrator demanded. “Bedford has been here for a good fifteen minutes.”

“Twenty,” Michael corrected, although his watch said it was more like twenty-five. The raccoon sniffed a bit, sampling the air for… what? Human scent? Michael’s? Raccoon faces didn’t give much away. Then, it climbed down into the room and approached the chair next to Michael’s. It left a trail of dirty paw prints all the way across the floor.

“Danine, this is Michael Bedford, your new master,” the administrator said.

Jonathan comes from a long line of sorcerers, and all his ancestors attended the Familiar Training Academy, where they were paired with shapeshifters. All seems fine for Jonathan until he discovers his familiar is a woman who can shift into a snake. And he’s supposed to bond with her?

Tamra is excited she’s getting another chance to serve as a familiar, especially because she’ll get to mate with her new master as part of their bond. Unfortunately Tamra just can’t follow rules. Any rules. Ever. When her rebellious nature conjures up evil from the school’s past, she and Jonathan have to jump in to reverse the disaster her impetuous nature’s caused this time.

Tamra smiled to herself as she slithered into the professor’s office. No one ever expected a snake, and because she was small, on the floor, and silent, her new charge -- supposedly her master -- hadn’t even noticed she’d entered the room. The guy was in for a big surprise.

The professor was just finishing his spiel for rookie sorcerers. “We’ve paired you with a familiar according to the questionnaires you filled out. It may seem an unusual match but be assured, you two are perfect for each other.”

“When can I meet her?”

“She’s here now,” the professor said.

Tamra took that as her cue to introduce herself. She wrapped her slender body around the leg of the visitor’s chair, climbed onto the seat and curled up in a perfect coil of brilliant scales.

The rookie jumped up and backed away about five feet. “It’s a snake.”

“She,” the professor corrected again. “This is Tamra.”

The guy obviously had a crappy attitude about snakes. This had happened before, more than once. Her last potential master had screamed and run from the room. The professor had been forced to assign a more placid animal to the man. A guinea pig, for God’s sake. Word on the grapevine was both of them were now miserable with each other. Served him right.

Anyway, this one wasn’t running, but he obviously wasn’t happy. So, she flicked her forked tongue at him.

“I assure you, Tamra is ideal for you,” the professor said. “We did a multivariate assessment of your personality and your needs.”

“And it said I needed a snake?” the man asked, his voice now a croak.

The professor folded his hands together on top of his desk. “Absolutely.”

Of course, no one had asked Tamra what she needed. The fact was, if she didn’t get a master soon, she might flunk out of this place, and she’d have to find another one. Schools for sorcerers and their familiars didn’t pop up everywhere.

The man started pacing. “There must be some mistake.”

The professor opened a computer file. “You are Jonathan Woodrow Dillson, correct?”

“Well, yes.”

The professor squinted at the screen. “Your father, grandfather, and uncles were all paired with familiars here, I believe.”

The man ran his fingers through short, dark hair. “Yes, yes, but…”

“They were all excellent students and went on to contribute to the field of arcane knowledge,” the professor said. “They all bonded with their familiars here according to our methods.”

The man slowly approached the chair Tamra was coiled up on. “It… she… can change into human form, can’t she?”

Well, duh. They wouldn’t be physically compatible if she remained a reptile. He’d never fit a huge, human cock inside her cloaca -- the one benefit of pairing with him rather than another snake. Forked penises were cool, but doing it with a human was lit AF. Or at least, that was the word around the familiars’ dorm.

“Of course she can change,” the professor answered. “All our familiars are shifters.”

“Then why doesn’t she?”

They both stared at Tamra, expecting her to perform for them. The professor had already warned her about her Bad Attitude. She was going to make nice with the rookie eventually. She might as well start now. So, she concentrated on her human form -- size, arms and legs, hair, her face -- and in a moment, she was sitting, naked, in the chair next to the one the man had jumped out of.

He jumped again, though not as far this time. “She’s naked.”

She wasn’t going to explain the obvious to him, so she gave the professor an expression that said, “Really? This guy?”

The professor ignored her. “She has clothing waiting in your rooms.”

“Of course.” The man sat back down and avoided looking at her.

“Introduce yourself, Tamra,” the professor said.

“I’m Tamra. I’ll be your familiar today,” she said.

The professor lifted an eyebrow in warning, so she extended a hand toward the man. “I’m Tamra.”

The man shook her hand but avoided looking directly at her. “I’m Jonathan. Good to meet you.”

“Splendid.” The professor clapped his hands together. “I just knew you two would get along swimmingly.”

WAITING FOR THE SON a steamy LGBT urban fantasy by Trevann Rogers

The world is on the brink of genocide. Can an incubus rock star really be its only hope?

Cheyenne, the half-human son of the Monarch, is getting beaten up on the regular. He's also fighting with his weretiger boyfriend, holding down his gig in the city's premier nightclub, and taking care of his kids. Adulting is more complicated than he thought it would be.

Someone close to the Monarch is putting the supernatural races at risk. With everyone in his inner circle under suspicion, he asks his son for help unearthing the traitor.

Cheyenne declines. He doesn't have the bandwidth, and politics is not his thing.

When his father's troubles escalate, Cheyenne has no choice but to get involved. If he succeeds, the traitor will be exposed. If he fails, his father will die, and the backstabber will be free to lift the veil of secrecy that protects them all.

Waiting for the Son is the third book in the LGBTQ urban fantasy series Living After Midnight.

Warning: This book features quirky supernatural creatures, a luncheon that makes an orgy look like a made-for-TV movie and an incubus who makes you hope what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Excerpt: Waiting for the Son

The standing-room-only crowd at Underhill had been into his new songs. Guys and girls alike had been in sync with him, swaying when he swayed and smiling when he smiled. His skin tingled with all the positive energy—until a voicemail from Unakite City Elementary School sucked all the happy out of him.

Cheyenne thumbed off his phone and tossed it onto the sofa in his dressing room. No sense in getting agitated. He couldn't find out what new crime his kid had committed until Monday morning. So instead, he changed out of his leather and chains performance gear and into more comfortable jeans and a black tee-shirt before packing up his guitar.

His footsteps echoed as he made his way through the empty club to the alarm panel. Eric, the manager, appreciated the chance to leave early, ensuring he made it to wherever he lay to rest before the sun came up.

Chey didn't like the vampire and owed him no favors. He didn't have to be the last to leave, and Eric knew it. Chey stayed when it worked for him, either because a fan-with-benefits caught his eye or he needed extra time to come down from the post-concert high.

He punched in his code and turned on the alarm. A sense of peace washed over him as the whirring of the industrial fans slowed, the florescent blue lights faded, and internal doors locked with a mechanical swoosh that reverberated throughout the cavernous building. The click-click of the alarm system started a rhythmic chant signaling it was time to leave or risk being trapped inside.

The club's rear double doors closed behind him with a clang. Underhill's parking was never adequate for the number of people attending his shows, but Cheyenne always arrived early to be sure he parked close to the building. With his history of getting jumped in alleys and parking lots, he wasn't taking any chances. At least Gre'gori, the owner, had installed adequate lighting.

He headed to the Cutlass, his ever-faithful ride. She stood waiting right where he left her, dependable if not shiny and new. Not that a bit of wear and tear was a problem. It kept anyone from thinking she was worth stealing or vandalizing. One day he'd be able to afford a new ride, something bigger and fancier, but even then, he'd keep this pretty green thing, maybe give her to the kids one day so she'd stay in the family. But for now, she was all his, like his guitar, the other important inanimate object in his life.

“Hey there, sweetness." He patted her roof affectionately, placed his guitar case on the passenger seat, and froze. The acrid taste of challenge and jealousy, something like burnt marshmallow and ash, assaulted his senses. Jeeze. Not again. Was the entire population of incubi out to kill him?

“Home,” Michael Blessing murmured as he drove past the city limit line into Eerie. He hadn’t been back in so long. Seemed like the day he left was the last day he thought about his hometown. Silly, really. Eerie wasn’t a bad place. It was quaint. Like a storybook town. The buildings were whimsical, full of gingerbread and swirls, plus glitter and bright paint. The streets were clean and the sidewalks wide. The flowers blossomed brighter, and the people seemed to welcome everyone back.

There wasn’t a stranger in Eerie -- except humans. They were all strangers, but he wasn’t a human. His Fae father had married a woman who knew witchcraft. They’d been a good pairing, and Michael had the best childhood. Everyone thought his mother was human, but he hadn’t cared. He was loved.

His parents were still alive and still cared about him. He was their son, and they’d always love him, but they had no idea the depths of loneliness he felt. They didn’t understand the grief he dealt with on a daily basis.

The woman he loved was dead. The moment he’d seen Chloe, he knew he wanted her for the rest of his life. She’d be the best partner and eventually would make him a father.

Then she had, but she died.

He hadn’t been able to manage the grief, not even a year and a half later. He needed somewhere to hide. Eerie wasn’t the place to hide. Most everyone in town stood out. Witches, Elves, Faeries, gargoyles, shifters and every other kind of paranormal creature was there.

But he had a cabin in the woods on the other side of town, with a pier on the lake and plenty of space to be quiet, to hide and regroup. No one would bother him. He could write and be alone with no one bugging him, making him come out of himself or pleading with him to be social.

He didn’t have any social in him.

Not today. Not this week. Maybe not ever.

His magic had dried up, too.

Did he care? A little, but not as much as he should. He drove through town, then onto the side road leading to the woods. The beauty of Eerie was that everyone had a space. The lake, the village, the little cottages, the woods… If a paranormal creature wanted a space, there was one. If he wanted to hide at his cabin and write, then practice his magic, then he could.

No one would annoy him.

He pulled into the dirt path that led to his cabin. The second he wound through the trees to his little house, he felt better. Like he belonged.

But that was always the way he felt when he came here. His heart was in the woods, among the trees and peace. Maybe he was always meant to be alone. Chloe had seen the most in him -- more than anyone -- but she was gone, and he had to pick up the pieces.

He pulled into the dirt patch next to the cabin and parked. As the engine cooled, he debated what to do. He needed to put up the carport to protect the Jeep -- not from the falling branches, but the leaves, rain and debris. He supposed he could use his magic to protect the vehicle, too. Probably should do that. It’d be a reason to practice his magic and prevent too much damage to his Jeep.

Despite needing to put the carport together, he left his vehicle and headed into the cabin. The place would need a lot of cleaning up, but he could use those tasks to procrastinate instead of writing.

He carried his bag into the cabin, then set about to put the tarp, PVC and canvas carport up. If nothing else, the carport would hide his vehicle, and maybe if anyone saw the lights on, they’d leave him alone.

He hated being so despondent and crabby, but he’d been hurt and had no idea how to get over his loss.

An hour later, he managed to secure the Jeep in the carport and even cleaned up the living room enough for living. He added a bit of magic to the carport, adding extra strength to the canvas to protect his vehicle. He’d murmured the words and checked to ensure the spell had gone correctly. Sure enough, it had, and he grinned.

At least one thing had gone his way.

He headed back into the house, and his stomach grumbled. He should eat, but there wasn’t anything in the fridge. Hell, the fridge hadn’t even been turned on. He needed to make a run to the store, but also should set up the Internet, too.

He cleaned the dust from the living room, then set about getting the kitchen in order. He removed the sheets around the house to reveal the furniture and, as he worked, he swore he heard music.

A familiar song. Sweet, too.

He paused, and his thoughts turned to a song he remembered from his childhood. A girl he’d known had sung the song, but probably never where she thought anyone could hear her.

He chuckled to himself. He hadn’t thought about that girl or the song in ages. What was her name? She’d been a sweet young woman, with flame-red hair and fiery eyes. She rarely spoke, but she’d filled out quickly and wore revealing clothes. She grabbed attention wherever she went, but no one really got to know her.

He knew her name. He’d lusted after her the entire time they were in school.

Lia.
