EXCERPT:
The dwindling luster of three moons had broken through the fog, enkindling the hills, until black clouds coasting from the north began to cast their shadow over the Mounds.
“Another bad omen,” Mother whispered, gazing up and shaking her head. Her midnight-colored eyes reflected the fading flecks of gold in the skies, the silver braid that fell over her shoulder glinting with sapphire cuffs.
I rolled my eyes. “Come on Mother, it’s only the sky!”
The growing absence of light didn’t matter anyway—I could make the trip to Zana’s house with my eyes closed. I built a deep bond with the hills of Lumenor at a young age, playing hide-and-seek and chase-a-thief with Zuri over the years. I knew their cold river streams and blue rock bones more intimately than my own body in some ways.
Mother paused at the base of the next hill. “I don’t need to remind you to watch your tongue regarding…“ She peeked over her shoulder to make sure we were alone. “Regarding you know what.”
I sighed. “You don’t need to say it every time. I know.”
