Slaves of an Alien Game by Nina R. Schluntz #ScienceFiction #Romance

Science Fiction Romance

Game Wardens rule most of the galaxy by a fierce empire built on enslavement and brokered deals. The only means to earn one’s freedom is by playing in the Alien Games. Two slaves go in the arena, the survivor, if there is one, is given their freedom and crowned a king, earning them a small country to rule and slaves of their own.

To make the battle more fun for spectators, genetically enhanced monsters, sahalias, are given to the combatants, but they must found in a scavenger hunt. Five orbs, each hatching into a lizard that will bond with their keeper, are hidden on a random planet. If the competitor finds all five, they have a great imbalance of power over the other, who will have none. The sahalias are created with one purpose, to battle to the death and destroy the other competitor.

Book One Excerpt

He stood there in the headlights of my car, not answering me. I wondered if he was going to shift into a more alien body and go, “You got me!”

“Are you an alien from another planet?” I repeated the question slowly as if that might help prompt an answer from him.

“Yes.” He offered nothing more. We both waited, for what I wasn’t sure. Maybe he was considering if he needed to dose me again.

The standoff ended with him turning to enter the junkyard. He angled his flashlight around, looking for his next orb, while I stood there unable to move or speak.

What the hell was a person supposed to do in this situation? Text their mom and say, “Hey. So, I got pulled into this alien scavenger hunt, and I’m gonna be gone for a while. Let’s hope I don’t get probed.” Include a few laughing-face emojis, maybe an alien-face emoji too.

“Caden!” His deep voice, which now sounded extremely alien to me—as if I could hear extra tones in it that I hadn’t noticed before—pulled me out of my reverie. Well, the third time he shouted my name, it did. The first two, I was too busy thinking about how weird his voice was.

I walked over to where he stood, his flashlight aimed at the orb on the ground.

“You must now decide,” he said. “Will you collect the orbs and be my ally?”

“You promise I’ll be safe?” I asked. “I’m not going to die doing this? I will be completely intact, my arm and everything. And this—these things will all be removed from my body?”

“If we are the victors of the game, you can have whatever you wish. I promise you that.”

“And if we lose?” The fact he’d worded his response the way he did made me wonder if the losers were killed or something.

He kept the flashlight aimed at the orb, and with his other hand, he cupped my chin.

“If you are my ally and do as I say, we will win. I assure you of this,” he said.

I waited, expecting that surge of magical opioids from his hand, but none came. Maybe he was decent enough to want me to make the decision sober. “And you’ll return me back here, to Earth?”

“Yes, with a settlement of the prize. Cash if you like,” he said.

Well... I mean, I needed his help getting this thing off anyway. And he wasn’t being a jerk. He seemed nice enough for an alien. He could clobber me with brute force and make me help him, except maybe the rules kept him from doing that or something. Would the rules keep me safe after we left Earth? Good gravy, what was I saying? I was acting as if this was a normal problem people faced.

“Fine, we’ll be an alliance,” I said.

“Wonderful. Pick up the orb.” His face truly looked pleased, and this time the tingle that went through my body was a burst of chemicals of my body’s own making.

Mate to the Mermen by Ashlynn Monroe #Fantasy #Romance

Mermen, Book 2

Fantasy Romance, Paranormal Romance, Shapeshifters, Reverse Harem

Date Published: 4/7/2023

Daisy Daniels never expected her temp job cleaning for three hunks on a private island would lead to romance. She clearly hasn’t been watching enough reality TV. Falling in love with one, let alone all three of the Watersons, would be complicated enough without the burden of protecting their secret. Ocean, Bayou, and River aren’t just celebrity treasure hunters, they’re mermen.

Protecting the secret of her lovers is more challenging than Daisy ever imagined, almost as challenging as learning to cook without the help of the internet. Still, her life with the Triad would be perfect if River’s father, the King of Atlantis, didn’t hate her, and if Kai, the Prince of the Aegeans, wasn’t constantly causing trouble.

When karaoke night reveals Daisy has gift she has a lot more to think about than the laundry. Saving the world was never in the job description. How can she risk using her newfound gift when she could harm the three people she loves most?

EXCERPT

River swore under his breath. He hadn’t expected his father to show up. The old man’s timing couldn’t have been worse. In the upheaval of the last twenty-four hours, they’d missed an important call about a dive. That job couldn’t have come at a ghastlier time. They needed the footage, but the wreck wasn’t in Aegean-controlled currents. When they’d decided to dive it, they’d had no idea how complicated their lives would become. He turned to Daisy. “This is my father, King Delta, the ruler of Atlantis.” He returned his attention to his father. “Father, this is Daisy. She’s my Triad’s mate.”

Father snorted a rude, almost dismissive, sound. “A human?” Father spoke out loud, but in Atlantean. “Why are you so intent on destroying my faith that you’ll rule? I have given you time to come to your senses, but I’m starting to lose patience.”

River bristled. He replied in English. “I will not allow you to disrespect my mate.”

Daisy put her hand on River’s arm. “It’s okay.”

He could see the compassion in her beautiful brown eyes. “No, it’s not.” River put his arm around Daisy. Ocean and Bayou moved to stand at his side.

King Delta sighed. “I see you and your Triad are in agreement,” he continued in Atlantean, excluding Daisy.

“We are,” River said. “Triad always.”

“The seal must be found.” Father glared at Daisy a moment before turning his attention back to River. “I can’t believe you were so weak as to allow that pathetic excuse for a male to come into your home and take what belongs to our kingdom.” He glanced at Ocean and Bayou. “For all your talk of Triad, they’ve done nothing to help you protect our legacy.” He pinned River with an intense look filled with authority and anger. “River, you and you alone were entrusted with the seal as my way to ensure you remembered your responsibilities. Instead, you have mated with a human and let Prince Kai walk away with a national treasure. What do you have to say for yourself?”

River’s throat tightened. Even as ridiculous as his father looked standing on land in nothing but a cape, he still bore his position with an aura of power. He could still make River feel like nothing with a glance. If he tried to explain that Daisy would have died if he’d gone after the artifact, would his father relent? Probably not. “I’m sorry, Father.”

“Sorry will not get the seal back. Sorry will not change the fact you tied your soul to a frail human. What are you going to do, my son?” Father crossed his arms over his chest.

“We will help River get the seal back,” Ocean assured the king.

Father’s brow creased as he regarded Ocean with disgust. “I was not talking to you, traitor.”

River scowled. “Ocean would give his life for me and for our kingdom. He is not a traitor.”

King Delta turned to Bayou. “And did you want the human too, monster? Couldn’t you have talked sense into your prince? You know how easily the vulnerable are destroyed. You know how weak a human is, and yet you would allow your prince to tie you all to one female’s short life?”

Bayou glared at the king. “She has the strength of a Triad now.”

Few would have had the courage to do the same. River’s throat tightened.

“You are all pathetic!” The king growled, shaking his fist at River. “If the law allowed me to give the throne to your sister, I would. If you do not regain the seal, I’ll have my army drag those criminals you bonded with to the deepest, darkest prison in Atlantis. I’ll make sure they stay alive, but in hellish misery.”

Ocean and Bayou both stiffened. River looked away, unable to meet the anger and shame Father directed at him. “Father, please, don’t say such things. Daisy is human and you might disapprove of my decision to form our Triad but doing that would be beneath you. A king should never seek personal vengeance. You’ve told me that many times.”

His father took a step closer to him. He raised his fist. “You dare --”

Daisy stepped closer to the king. “I don’t know what you’re saying to them but chill out.”

King Delta turned his attention away from River to glare at Daisy. “Chill out?” he parroted in heavily accented English.

“Yes,” she said. “Chill. These are amazing men, and your tone is clear no matter what language you’re speaking. They don’t deserve a lecture. This is their home. If you can’t be respectful, maybe you should leave.”

River, Ocean, and Bayou inhaled sharply in unison. No one had ever dared tell King Delta to leave before now.

“I will not do this chill out! Fool human! You are of weak thoughts. You give yourself to these males, but they are little fish. Weak fish.” King Delta’s chin rose as he narrowed his eyes at Daisy.

“Let me assure you, there’s nothing little about these fish.” Daisy rolled her eyes and a small chuckle escaped. She looked to River, and he could see love in her gaze. “They are strong and brave.”

The king’s guard wore heavy tunics that fell to their knees. River was glad for Daisy’s sake that they were mostly covered as the large men approached her. Bayou was the first to make a protective move toward Daisy. The guards, knowing full well how easily Bayou could destroy their minds with gift, all stopped.

Daisy glared at the king of Atlantis, causing River to catch his breath in fear for her. “Who’s the little fish now? You need all these big guys to protect you from a human woman’s words?”

The king gave a derisive snort, but he held his hand up to stay his guard. In Atlantean he said, “Don’t bother with this unarmed human. She’s no threat to us.” Then he looked at Daisy and returned to speaking English. “Your tongue is sharp, female. But in water you have no protection from my wrath. Stay dry, woman of my son’s Triad, for under the waves my anger is great.” He turned, his cape billowing dramatically, then motioned for his guard to follow. His entourage tripped over themselves in their haste.

River was quiet as he watched them go. Bayou had moved to put his arm around Daisy. When they were gone Daisy turned to look at her Triad. She tilted her head to the side as her brow furrowed. “What? Why are you all so pale?”

Bayou stepped back to scowl at her. He started to pace. “That was fucking stupid. If you see River’s father again, keep your mouth shut.”

Daisy sucked in a sharp breath. Her lips pursed angrily, and her gaze shifted on Bayou with wrath. River put his arm around her, tugging her close. He picked up her long brown braid and tickled her nose with it. Her soft, sensual giggles broke the tension. When she looked up into his face, he had to kiss her. His lips caught hers and his kiss was hungry, needy.

No one else had ever spoken up for him like she had. She’d had no idea just how dangerous her actions were, but that blind need to protect his heart fed his need to be close to her. When he broke the kiss, he put his cheek on the top of her head. “Brave and foolish. You’re perfect for us.”

Excerpt

No one responded to my single knock on her door, so I pounded on the door. Still no answer.

My nose twitched. Her overpowering perfume from the other night drifted my way. There was no mistaking that pungent aroma. She had to be close by. Without thinking twice, I headed downstairs to find the hotel manager.

Even before the short, balding man put a magnetic card into the door lock, I had a sinking feeling that we weren’t going to like what we found. Chalk it up to writing murder mysteries for the past ten years, but I didn’t dismiss feelings. They were a natural part of the selection process and a dogged reminder of human frailty.

          He opened the door wide.

At first, there was nothing to see, save an unmade bed, clothing and cosmetics scattered around and a standing ice bucket with a bottle of champagne.

          Champagne?

We’d checked into the hotel at 11:30, Hilda and I had gone to lunch with Marliss begging off. She was entertaining at noon when we had the signing event at two? Curious.

The hotel manager stepped aside and I walked over by the ice bucket. I was about to pull out my cell phone to take pictures when a furry pink shoe on the floor by the massive bed caught my eye. We had been booked into suites with four-poster beds that occupied seemingly half of our bedrooms. Marliss’ room looked just like mine.

I walked two steps toward the furry shoe with heels too high for me when a leg suddenly stretched out not far from it. I froze in my tracks when the rest of the body came into view. Crystal clear.

          Marliss!

My stomach pitched with the mixed aromas of perfume and body fluids. She lay crumpled on the floor with a small amount of blood oozing from the side of her head. Her eyes were open, yet unseeing. I didn’t expect to find a pulse.

I turned to the short man immediately behind me. He rubbed his eyes as if they were deceiving him and took a step back.

          “Call 9-1-1.”

He looked from Marliss to me and back.

          “Now!”

With a shaky breath, he nodded and backed all the way out of the room, shutting the door quietly behind him. The idiot.

I snapped to and remembered I had my phone on me. As I made the call, I was careful not to touch anything in the room, especially by the body. I had written scenes like this too many times to be unaware of the liability I had put myself into just by being here.

Marliss was dead. I knew that for sure, but my troubles were just beginning.

While waiting for the police to arrive, I stayed away from the body, but my eyes searched the room. Marliss’ suite, like mine, had a bedroom separated from a nice sitting area with a table and chairs situated by a large window overlooking the city. The sleek paneled doors were wide open to the sitting area. An ice bucket sat by the table, but a chair had tipped over. It lay on its side pointing the way to Marliss’ body in the next room. The champagne in the ice bucket hadn’t been opened and had to be plenty cold by now. Two champagne glasses sitting on the table indicated she had been expecting company.

The rest of the sitting room held little interest for me, so my eyes strayed back to the body. Marliss was wearing lingerie. Sexy lingerie. A frilly lavender number, I’m sure by a famous designer, with a barely-there bra, thong and tiny lace skirt. I couldn’t be sure from this distance, but the skirt appeared to be torn. The whole outfit didn’t cover much and I was tempted to reach for a blanket. Tempted, but I didn’t. The crime scene needed to be kept as it was.

Her face was turned to me and I was sad to see her blank eyes. The Marliss I’d known and, okay, disliked, had eyes that could look right through you or knock you down with her deadly glare. Hilda had been the recipient of that look more than once.

The blood splatter pattern indicated she’d been killed where she had fallen—yes, I knew about patterns from years of research—and the red mark on her face indicated a hard slap. Maybe the slap had caused her fall and she hit her head on the corner of the bed when she fell.

Maybe her death was an accident.

Maybe. Oh, no. My eyes saw more than I wanted. A small shaft of sunlight flashed on something shiny by the bedpost. My feet itched to move closer to see what it could be when my brain came back online.

          Hilda’s emerald ring.

          No, it couldn’t be.

I remembered my conversation with Hilda. She’d remarked that she had left it back in her room. But her body language belied her words. Her chin dipped to her chest as she spoke and she’d averted her eyes from mine. I could swear she was lying, and her comment hadn’t made sense. I knew how much she loved that ring because Antoine gave it to her.

Maybe Antoine had returned to the scene and asked for it back. Had he then gone to see Marliss, killed her and dropped the ring to implicate Hilda?

          Food for thought.

          Where could I find Antoine?

I checked back through my texts from Marliss. She’d mentioned something I was trying to remember. Ah, here it was. She had to miss lunch because she had a quick meeting with a secret admirer. Apparently, the “meeting” was code for a nooner and needed to be quick because the signing event would be starting at two.

So whatever happened to her, happened between noon and two o’clock. I glanced at the door’s heavy security locks. She must have let him in, another indication she knew the killer. It would have been nice if she’d let me inn on her little secret, but that was the way Marliss worked. She was always cloaked in secrecy, which didn’t save her.

The man opening the door wasted no time.

“I’m Detective Sloan from LAPD.  You the one who found the body?”

          “Yes, sir.”

          “Your name?”

          “Jaynie Floyd.”

“What’s your connection to the deceased?”

“I was on a book tour with her.”

Although the man wore wire-framed glasses, I could see the squint aimed my way. His fake smile wasn’t filling me with confidence.

          “A book tour?”

“Yes, sir. We’re fellow authors at a book signing event.”

I could tell he didn’t have a clue what I was talking about, so I babbled some more.

“It’s when authors go to bookstores to sign books purchased by readers.”

While he stood still sizing me up, I suppose, I had a good look at him too. A wrinkled jacket over jeans with a crooked tie. All that was missing from his costume was the felt hat and he could have been straight out of a Mickey Spillane novel. He looked more like Spillane’s detective, Mike Hammer, from what I read, than Stacy Keach from the old television show. A hard-boiled detective faced me as the color bleached from the hotel room placing me in the middle of a classic film noir.

I knew there’d be a holstered gun under the jacket, and a badge peeked out from his belt. He wasn’t any happier to see me than I was to see him. If more minutes ticked by, I would be breaking into a cold sweat.

His gaze dropped to the body and he moved toward it. A uniformed officer stood by the door keeping me in his sight at all times. What did he think I was going to do? Make a run for it? I sure did think about doing exactly that, but I was pinned in place by his steely look. My knees had locked up and I seriously hoped I wouldn’t tip over. I’d be lying next to poor Marliss.

The detective’s gaze flicked over Marliss, taking her in. I bet he had a snapshot of her in his head and details would come back to him as he thought over the scene. I’d written about detectives like Sloan, so I wasn’t uncomfortable being around him. I just didn’t appreciate being considered a suspect because I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When a police photographer entered the room, Detective Sloan moved me into the sitting area. His questioning look returned to an otherwise neutral face.

“How did you happen to find the body?”

“She missed the signing event today at Book Soup and I came to look for her.”

“She hadn’t said anything to you about possibly being detained?”

“Actually, she did.” When I reached for my cell phone in my pocket, the detective took a step back as the uniformed officer at the door took a step forward.

“Easy, guys,” I said. “I’m getting my phone out.”

Sloan didn’t exactly relax, but his shoulders weren’t hunched around his ears anymore.

I scrolled through my text messages until I found what I was looking for.

          “Here. See?”

He took my phone and read the message. His face remained as vacant as a blank chalkboard.  I bet he was a good poker player. He handed the phone back.

“We’ll need to copy all your messages from Marliss Kendall. Could you come down to the station today?”

          “Certainly.”

He jerked his head toward the officer at the door. “Officer Petrie will give you the information you need.”

I glanced at Petrie who embodied those uniformed guards at Buckingham Palace. An expression on his face was as useless as my presence in a hotel room with a dead body.

“Can you add anything else to what you’ve told me?” asked Sloan.

          “No, sir.”

          “You sure?”

I could tell he thought I knew more than I was saying and maybe he was right. I didn’t mention the ring because I wasn’t supposed to have seen it. I had been closer to the body than I should have been and I wasn’t going to tattle on myself. Besides, Sloan didn’t appear to be a dummy. He’d learn whose ring it was in due course.

          “Yes, sir. May I go?”

He nodded curtly. “Give your contact information to Officer Petrie and go down to the central station to make your deposition. I’ll need it as soon as possible.”

          “I can do that.”

I left as quickly as possible. Being close to poor Marliss for so long had me rushing back to my room for a long, hot shower. With soapsuds rinsing off, several things occurred to me:

1.    What was the Detroit connection?

2.    Was she being blackmailed? The scene in the alley back in San Francisco could have been about blackmail. Maybe a rabid fan?
