Enter the world of the most notorious gambling den in London, where matches are made... unusually. Welcome to the world of THE LYON'S DEN: The Black Widow of Whitehall Connected World, where the underground of Regency London thrives... and loves.

What’s a young lady to do when a powerful lord tries to abscond with her and make her his mistress?

When you’re Miss Honoria Quinn, you leap from his carriage and run like the wind to find some place to hide. Trouble is, Honoria mistakenly chooses The Lyon’s Den, a disreputable gambling house as her sanctuary, a move that ends up with her having to make another choice at the hands of the Den’s match-making proprietor Mrs. Dove-Lyons: wed a complete stranger or become the lord’s mistress.

No good deed goes unpunished…

Thomas, Lord Braeton agrees to attend a wager at The Lyon’s Den only to keep his brother-in-law out of trouble. What he doesn’t count on is becoming embroiled in one of Mrs. Dove-Lyons’s schemes to marry him off. But when he tries to come to the aid of another peer, Thomas finds the only honorable thing he can do to save Miss Quinn’s reputation is put aside his hopes for a love match for himself and instead offer to marry her.

As Thomas and Honoria set out on a wary journey to matrimony, can they learn to live together and hope love will grow between them? Or are they doomed to a loveless marriage of convenience from which one or both will want to escape?

His light amber eyes had turned dark again. Was it a trick of the light in this corridor that did that? It made him look so…hungry.

A shiver raced down her back.

“As today is our wedding day, Honoria…”

Every muscle in her body tensed. Would he go back on his word not to press her so soon? Her heart raced and her body heated. Did she want him to press her?

“Yes?” The single word was barely a breath.

“I wondered if you would allow me…”

She held her breath. Allow him…what?

“A kiss?”

Gasping, Honoria didn’t know whether to laugh or scowl at him. Thomas could be a rascal it seemed. “I believe that would be in order.” They had not even kissed after the ceremony. Papa had always frowned upon such public displays. “It is, as you say, our wedding day.”

“Yes, it is.” Suddenly he loomed so close to her all the air seemed to have been sucked out of the corridor. Gently, he raised her chin and lowered his head until her mouth was mere inches from his.

Unable to stare into those darkening eyes any longer, Honoria closed hers and waited breathlessly.

Suddenly his lips pressed against her, soft and warm. Everything about the man made her feel warm. He held her head in both hands and turned it ever so slightly, until their mouths seemed to merge into one. With that small change came an overawing feeling of rightness, as though this was the way a kiss was meant to be.

She shifted just a little toward him, drawn ever closer to his masculine presence.

In response, he pressed his lips against her harder, more insistent.

A thrill of longing shot through her. As though she wanted more of that.

Excerpt #3

Declan

“Listen, Shannon.” I take her hands in mine. “Dave extended the lighthouse rental. We have until five tomorrow.”

“Does Mia know?”

“Yes. It's all taken care of. “

Eyes rolling up to the right, Shannon's clearly calculating. “Really? No phones, no work, just you?”

“Can you handle that much of me?”

“I can handle all of you.”

“I'm a lot.”

Her hand moves to my thigh, sliding up. “Yes. You are.”

The groan that comes out of me is a day and a half long. “So we're clear on the rules? No talking about kids, only talking about us.”

Her finger bops my nose. “Deal. But tomorrow, at 5:01 p.m., I get to talk about whatever I want.”

“Of course.”

A little laugh comes out of her as she shakes her head. “You continue to find ways to intrigue me, Declan.”

“Good. Can't let our relationship go stale.”

“Oh, it's anything but stale. Life with you is nothing but surprises and change,” she whispers as she leans forward and kisses me again.

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

A Kind of Hush explores whether there is a gray area between right and wrong. The Mackie family is enjoying a June outing at a rugged park near their Buffalo, New York home when tragedy strikes. One parent survives along with their teenage daughter and seven-year-old son found hiding in the woods. Was this a horrendous accident or something more heinous, and if so, whodunnit and whydunit? A mantle of ambiguity – a kind of hush – hangs between the survivors like a live grenade without its pin as each one deals with the circumstances and revelations surrounding the incident.

A Kind of Hush is one of five finalists in the 16th annual National Indie Excellence Awards contest in the highly competitive mystery category.

Chapter 1

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room

BUFFALO, NEW YORK. Gabriel Mackie had just celebrated his fourth birthday the first time he visited the whisper room, a windowless enclave with lavender walls brimming with daydreams, obscured from reality. All he knew for certain was that his older brother, Griff, nicknamed Boo, was gone. His bedroom at the end of the long hallway had been transformed into a guest room with ecru lace duvets instead of the blue and white pinstriped spreads covering the twin beds. Vanished were his toy box and New York Yankee American League pennants that had plastered the walls, replaced by paintings of water lilies and wheat fields. A stray tear trickled down Gabe’s cheek when he remembered Boo’s curly blonde hair and how he snorted when he laughed. Silence is deafening and the Mackie household screamed heartbreak.

Tree branches dipped in the wind tossing shadows across the windows heralding a tempest gathering force. Matt sipped his coffee and thumbed through last night’s restaurant receipts. Summer, lost in her on own thoughts, mindlessly poured herself a refill with one hand while twirling a strand of hair with the other. Gabe tiptoed to the kitchen doorway, jumping back when he heard his mother slam her fist on the counter.

“It’s Willa’s fault Griff is gone,” her voice stringent and tight. “Tickling him while he sucked on a gumball, for God’s sake. I trusted her to take care of him for fifteen minutes—fifteen damn minutes—while I picked up Gabe from a birthday party. He couldn’t find his shoes . . . I would have been home sooner and maybe . . . I love my daughter, but . . . She knew to call 911 in an emergency . . . Why the hell didn’t she?”

Matt shook his head. “Summer come on . . . you’ve got to quit blaming her,” his voice rising an octave in frustration. “You’re as responsible as Willa.”

Summer turned her back to her husband shielding the wounds caused by his words.

“I shouldn’t have said that,” regret echoed in his apology. “I’m so sorry . . . Please, we don’t need to be playing this blame game. . . .”

“I guess it’s too much to ask for you to understand what I’m going through, Matt. What part of my daughter killing our son don’t you get?”

“Honey, you’re overreacting. . . .”

They both turned as Gabe scampered into the room dragging a stuffed elephant by its trunk.

“Mommy, did Willa find where Boo’s hiding? Quackers and me wanna play next . . . you count to ten and say ready-or-not, here I come . . . okay?”

About the Author

JoDee Neathery is a firm believer that dreams do come true with the release of her debut award winning novel, Life in a Box, in July 2017 asking the question, how much would you sacrifice to hide a secret? A few colorful characters were plucked off her family tree, encasing their world inside fictional events to create her literary novel.

The idea for her latest novel, A Kind of Hush, appeared in the middle of the night with the profile of the young boy and the first few sentences scratched out on the every-present notepad on the nightstand beside her bed. “I didn’t know the whole story, but I knew that whatever I wrote next, this young lad had to play a major role in the narrative and Gabriel Edward Mackie doesn’t disappoint.”

JoDee was born in Southern California moving to Midland, Texas at the age of five. Her professional career began in the banking industry moving into public relations executive recruiting until relocating to East Texas where she experienced more opportunities to write and enjoys a byline, Back Porch Musings, a lighthearted view of life in general, in an area newspaper. Her dream “job” has been chairing and writing minutes and reviews for the community book club, Bookers, for eighteen years and it was those members that championed her novel writing journey. “They believed in me before I did.”

Blood on Their Hands by Bob Brink #LegalThriller @RABTbooktours

Legal Thriller

Published: February 9, 2022

Publisher: Precipice Press

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

A lawyer defends a young Black man who was brutally assaulted by two bigoted police officers and discovers a deeper conspiracy that endangers his life.

Hiram Garbuncle is a veteran criminal defense attorney—as well as a racist, miserly alcoholic. His life revolves around hoarding money, following sports, pursuing sex, drinking—and the prideful practice of law.

Alec Monceau is a Black man working to support his daughter’s family in Trinidad. It is 2008, and his car carries an Obama bumper sticker. This political advertisement leads to a superfluous traffic stop and a brutal beating by police.

It goes against Garbuncle’s grain to defend a Black man from a charge of violently resisting arrest, but he is so confident of winning that he is negligent in the jury selection, and a mistrial occurs. He then discovers incriminating evidence on the two cops, and his new challenge becomes how to keep himself and his client alive pending a new trial.

BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS words) is a legal thriller that borrows themes from the movies Gran Torino and My Cousin Vinnie. It relies on the author's experience as a newspaper reporter who once covered a Ku Klux Klan meeting.

Excerpt

The overhead lighting bounced off Garbuncle’s face, which glowed with after-shave lotion. His straight, graying hair was slicked back from a receding hairline. He wore a bright yellow leisure suit a la the nineteen-seventies, pressed and neat except for a small red wine stain on a lapel. A fire-engine-red shirt and royal-blue tied completed his ensemble. Glistening black patent leather shoes competed with his face for reflection of the ceiling lighting.

Garbuncle motioned for Alec to rise, and pointed to the witness stand. Alec walked with a hesitant gait, glancing to his right at the six-member jury.

“Now, Alec, I want you to tell the court what happened on the evening of April eighteen that led to your arrest.” Alec wore an anxious look, and Garbuncle said, “Go ahead, Alec. You may speak.”

“I drive west on Lake Worth Road, go home from Computer Freak. I work dere.”

“Excuse me, Alec. What time of day was it?”

                    “About forty-five minutes after 7 o’clock.”

“Was it beginning to get dark?”

“Yes, but not all da way.”

“So it was about as dark as you? Never mind, that was a joke.” A broad smirk.

Judge Crabtree jerked his head back, staring with eyes wide. Alec had a blank look.

“Tell us what happened next,” said Garbuncle.

“I see red light in back mirror, den I hear police car.”

“You mean you heard a siren?”

“Yes, dat it. I forgot what it called. I know should drive right side of road, but no can move. Cars in dat lane. I go slow, and when cars past, drive to right lane. Police car come behind me. I turn onto road at corner, go past water on side, den park. I get out. Police park car behind. One walk to me. He ask me why I no move over quick. I say no can, cars dere. He hit me on head wid stick.”

“Do you mean his billy club?”

“Dat what it called? Yes, club—long, narrow.”

“Tell me which of those two men sitting at that table”—Garbuncle turned back toward the defense table and pointed—“which one struck you.”

Alec pulled his shoulders in and hesitated. Garbuncle could see the fear in his client’s face.

“It’s all right. He can’t hurt you now. You need to tell us which one struck you.”

                    “Dat strong man, tall. Young.”

Garbuncle pointed to him. “You mean that one? Larry Pickens?”

                    “Yes.”

                    The cop’s face was impassive.

“Did Officer Pickens say anything to you?

“Yes. He yell at me I resis’ arres’, and he teach me lesson.”

                    “What happened next?”

“Den oder policeman come from police car, say I need fix back light, no put Obama sticker on bumper. I try tell him get light fixed tomorrow. He hit me in stomach wid club. I no can breat’. Oder policeman hit me wid club back of neck.” He placed his hand just above his shirt collar.

“I fall on ground. Dey put handcuffs on me, pull me up. Hurt very bad. Dey injure my shoulder. I wear ting for arm two weeks.”

                    “Do you mean a sling?”

“Yes, yes. Doctor call it sling.”

                    “Then what happened?”

“Strong policeman ask where I from. I say Trinidad. He hit me wid club low on legs. He say I look like Obama. He say monkeys take over country. I tink he mean Obama and me monkeys.”

The judge, his dome shiny through strands of white hair, noticed Garbuncle trying to squelch a laugh, but allowing a smile to open. “Counselor, do you think that’s funny?”

Garbuncle saw, peering over the top of wire-rimmed glasses, a stern face. His grin vanished like a rabbit disappearing at a magician’s snap of the fingers. “Oh, no, Your Honor. A joke I heard last night popped into my head for some reason. I apologize.”

The Supernatural Council of the Pacific Northwest didn't thoroughly think through the consequences when we decided to come out of the supernatural closet. Heaven is pissed. Hell is not respecting our treaty. The mundanes and fanatical religious groups our protesting our existence. Let's not mention, the weirdos who want to bag a monster boyfriend/girlfriend.

Add insult to serious injury. Supes are going missing. Powerful supes. I'm not sure if it's Heaven, Hell, the protestors, or fanatics wanting their personal non-fictional monster in their closet.

The cops are breathing down my neck because they think I have something to do with it all.

Oh, and the Baba Yaga isn't a myth. It's a powerful coven and they want me to join them.

Did I mention my full-blood fae siblings are counting the hours until my second puberty is complete so they can kill me and daddy Oberon says I have to make my own faerie to stop them?

Who has time for that?

If You Can’t Stand the Heat by Camille Anthony

He stood in the doorway of the Bakery’s kitchen, belt dangling from his hand, watching his mate of forty years bustle about preparing refreshments for the library shindig about later that evening. As always, the sight of her had his heart doing that funny leap in his chest, his cock echoing the movement behind the zipper of his jeans. After all this time, it still only took a look, a whiff of his female’s scent to have him hard as a cactus spike.

Along with his surging lust came a powerful burst of love and he knew if prairie dogs didn’t mate for life, he’d still never let this woman go. He’d die without her. However, that didn’t mean he was blind to her faults.

His Reba was an incorrigible busybody, continually putting her finger in other folk’s pies. He understood her interfering tendencies were part of her caring nature and that would have been fine as long as she contained her meddling within the family.

She didn’t.

He wasn’t mad at her. Edison’s smile was full of masculine anticipation. The punishment of her infraction was going to be intensely pleasurable for both of them.

* * *

Heat from the tray of kitchen-sink cookies radiated through her oven mitts as Reba pushed the door of the oven closed with a bump of her plump behind. Humming, she carried her burden to the cooling racks and began sliding this last batch off the pan onto the wire trays. Inhaling deeply, loving the smells of fresh baking that meant home to her, the buxom baker couldn’t help smiling. She loved the holidays. All of them, but this season, Reba had plenty to celebrate.

For the first time in years, all her children would be coming home to Barkus. Even better, Puppy -- the younger brother who was like another son since she’d raised him from the time their parents died in a car accident -- would be introducing his new mate to the family. Reba sighed happily, making a mental note to look up information on the Kwanzaa rituals as Carly was Afro-American. She didn’t want the newest member of the pack to feel slighted.

“Reba!”

Startled, Reba jumped, the last cookie flying off her spatula to explode into warm gooey crumbs on the stainless steel counter. She turned toward the door and her mate, ready to blast him for sneaking up on her, only to jerk to a halt, heart skidding around inside her chest until it came to rest in the pit of her belly at the sight of her broad shouldered mate -- brown eyes alight with mayhem -- brandishing his wide leather belt.

Hot damn, I’m about to get spanked.

“Edison, what are you doing here in the middle of the afternoon? I thought you were at the bar, hanging with all your old coots.” She was proud her voice didn’t shake.

“I was. Spoke to Bucky. He was a mite upset.”

She knew exactly what that old dawg was upset about and she wasn’t a bit ashamed of what she’d done. Huffing, she folded her arms over her full chest. Her tone was belligerent. “Served him right. He had no business trying to back out of his promise to Carly.”

Edison sighed. “And you had no business sharing something I told you in confidence.”

“He asked for it.”

The glint in his eyes belied the sorrowful expression on his face and Reba shivered, knowing what was coming before Edison got the words out his mouth. “Well, you’ve asked for this.” He gestured toward the door leading to the next room. “March yourself into the pantry while I go flip the open sign and lock the door.” He headed out the kitchen but paused to turn and spear her with a warning glare. “If you’re not ready when I get back, I’ll be adding to your punishment.”

Yippee!

BIG WILD LOVE ADVENTURE by Julianna Keyes #romcom #giveaway @goddessfish

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award a digital copy of the book to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

After being ditched at the altar, Emmy Shaw’s heart, like her dented food truck, is definitely not open for business. Deeply in debt to her parents and evicted from her apartment, she takes a friend’s drunken dare and fills out an application for a new dating-adventure reality show. She never expects to be chosen—or to get a chance at the show’s huge cash prize, which could put her life back on track.

But when she’s abandoned in the middle of the jungle two months later wearing only a bathing suit and a backpack, she questions if being on the show might be even worse than the #emmytrashtruck hate brigade she left back home. Then she meets her fellow cast members—including sexy, inscrutable Wes—and starts to reconsider, wondering if maybe money’s not all she stands to gain from this experience.

After a year of abysmal failures, this summer of cave treks, jungle hikes, impromptu talent shows, and a sexy flirtmance turns out to be just the thing to help Emmy rebuild her shattered confidence. She signed up for the show to hide from the mess her life had become, but this escape from reality might be just what she needs to find herself.

Everyone looks amazing as we wait in the field, which has been transformed into the elimination pavilion. There’s a wooden platform where we all stand, men on one side, women on the other, backed by a large wall with an enormous heart made of roses. Kip stands before us, his teeth stark white even in the dark, with a large pink trunk next to him. Off to the side is a gazebo ringed with flowers and fairy lights and boasting a large sign that reads LOVE SHACK.

The producers had already explained some of what to expect tonight, but for the sake of the viewers, Kip goes over the rules with us while the cameras roll. The longer he talks, the more jittery I get, and I know I’m not the only one. Sweat trickles down the small of my back and behind my knees, and my stomach keeps trying to claw its way up my esophagus. I’ve been here an entire week and we’ve yet to have a challenge with a cash prize, and I really don’t want to leave with nothing.

“Tonight is the first ever Big Wild Love Adventure Re-Pairing Ceremony,” Kip solemnly informs the camera. “Earlier today, the contestants secretly cast their votes about whether or not to re-pair with their current partner. If they both choose to re-pair, they’ll automatically go to the Love Shack. If one or both choose not to re-pair, they’ll remain in the dating pool.”

It finally dawns on me that the pavilion floor has been painted with high gloss blue shellac to represent water. Flames from nearby tiki torches reflect off its surface, bringing it to life. Around us, the jungle murmurs quietly, like it too, is trying to figure out just what the hell we’re all doing here.

About the Author:Julianna Keyes is a Canadian writer who has lived on both coasts and several places in between. She’s been skydiving, bungee jumping and white water rafting, but nothing thrills—or terrifies—her as much as the blank page. She loves Chinese food, foreign languages, baseball and television, though not necessarily in that order, and writes sizzling stories with strong characters, plenty of conflict, and lots of making up.

When not helping characters fall in love, she sometimes kills them in thrillers and suspense stories written as Elaine Murphy

A tale beyond the waves....

Stanley is going through the motions of life, endlessly seeking employment in the pages of the daily newspaper and frequently coming up short. When he receives a call from his friend, Mrs Anderson, a widow whose only son is giving her cause for concern he thinks the young man is just looking for some space away from his interfering mother.

Stanley’s initial scepticism soon gives way to fears that Mrs Anderson was right about Jason when he witnesses him being kidnapped. Trying to save him, Stanley is also taken by the group and finds himself and Jason far out to sea on a boat. And it’s clear the kidnappers want rid of them both.

Certain of his impending death, Stanley is rescued at the last moment by a woman named Lythea. Her ability to breathe underwater is astounding enough but when Stanley finds he too has the same talent it signals the beginning of an epic adventure beneath the waves, as he desperately tries to track down Jason’s kidnappers and save him from a watery end.

Can Stanley get to Jason before he is killed? And what are the secrets behind his amazing new power? Stanley is about to discover more about himself and his family than he ever imagined.

About the Author

Mariam Is a Mechanical Engineer from Saudi Arabia. Despite majoring in an engineering field, she never forgot her true passion which is writing and literature. Her father encouraged her love for reading from a very young age. That at the age of 12 she had already finished reading many books by some of the most widely acclaimed novelists, Such as Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Mariam took an interest in writing, though she never had the determination to become a published author until recently when she completed writing her last novel The Deep.  It was a story that she enjoyed writing so much that she really wanted to share it with the world.

Mariam was busy with her studies during the time she started first mapping out this book’s initial plot. Nevertheless, at any given time she would turn to writing, which helped her escape the stresses and routine of daily life by immersing herself in the details of her story. Which revolves around a mysterious empire deep under the ocean, a place with no shortage of wondrous adventures, and where breathing underwater and mingling with unusual ocean creatures was possible.

It took Mariam many years though to study marine life, and learn more about the ocean in order to be able to build the events in her story. She carefully crafted every detail to weave an anecdote that merges the beauty of the ocean with the art of story-telling. Moreover, her aim was to capture the essence of this hidden realm beneath the waves. And introduce the reader to a glimpse of its magic.

Mariam conceived the idea of the Deep in 2014 when she heard about a friend who got into a terrible diving accident. Fortunately, all turned well for her friend. But this incident captivated Mariam’s attention and she ended up writing the accident’s details on a note. These notes were later developed into a plot. But Mariam had writer’s block and she was about to give up working on the book. During this time, she moved to Australia. She would often wander, and hike parts of this beautiful country’s wilderness. One of the places she would come to love the most is called the great ocean road. A coast area that overlooks beautiful ocean sceneries, these trips helped revive Mariam’s dream to continue writing the story, and finally, bring The Deep to life.

Moreover, Mariam would go snorkelling regularly in order to envision and experience fully the world that her characters are experiencing. Whether it was the murky waters, the beautiful corals, strong water currents, or even not so friendly fishes.

Although finishing the manuscript was a very daunting task, especially since Mariam had to translate her own book from Arabic to English herself. It was an experience that she fully enjoyed, Learned a lot from, and helped her dive into a world that is immensely mesmerizing and not fully explored.
