Deciding to be more actively present and grateful in the moment, I ventured back to the beautiful Kensington Gardens the following day. It was there that I made my first gratitude journal entry:

I am sitting here in the beautiful Kensington Gardens in London. It’s another gorgeous, sunny day, and the sun's warmth can be comfortably felt through the shade of the trees around me. The sound of the five surrounding water fountains gently flowing into a beautiful pond provides a sense of tranquility. I’m surrounded by relaxed families, couples, groups of friends, and even some who appear to be fellow solo travelers. I feel at peace in this moment, witnessing the miracles of life all around me. There is so much beauty in the present. I am thankful for this serenity, this beautiful day, and these views.

That trip went on to be the most amazing trip I’ve ever been on, even though I went alone. I made so many memories in London that I could write another book dedicated entirely to that trip. I got to tour many historical places, stand in spots where world-altering events took place, experience a day at boozy brunch with locals, and my birthday the following day at an inflatable adult obstacle course with new friends. I partied the night away with people I’d never see again. I ate the most delicious meals in historical settings. I danced with and kissed a tall, dark, handsome Italian man. I drank pints with my dinner each night and lived out things I’d only previously dreamed of. I met people from all over the world and learned so much. More importantly, I began the steps of exploration I needed to find myself again. It wasn’t until the end of the trip that the most magical thing happened, but, first, we must look at some of the other things I had been doing behind the scenes along the way and leading up to the trip!

“Callie?” Levon tilted his head and half-smiled. “What is it about you that makes me want to forget this life and just be with you?”

“My animal magnetism?”

“Probably,” he murmured. “What did I do that made you hate me?”

“I don’t hate you.” She could be evasive when she wanted to—like right now.

He nodded. “Salina?”

She tensed and pressed her lips together. Salina had a lot to do with why she couldn’t be alone with him. “She’s part of it.”

“Cards on the table,” Levon said. “I never slept with her. Never wanted to. That night in Dallas, she followed me to my room. Said she wanted to meet Haven and I believed her. All she wanted was to bed one of us. Didn’t matter which.”

She’d heard this before.

“She told everyone we slept together because it gave her credibility,” he said. “But we didn’t. She saw your photo in my guitar case and knew there was no chance. She told me to pay her a grand and she’d forget ever being in my room. When I said no, she told everyone we slept together.”

Callie knew most of those details, too—all except the thing about the photo. “I saw you kiss her.” The memory had been imprinted on her mind and tore at her heart.

“You saw a misunderstanding and a woman who wanted to hurt you. She did that just to piss you off and it worked.” Levon held both of her hands. “I don’t know what you’re not telling me, but those are my truths. I love you, Callie Mae King. Have since we met.”

“You remember me?” Hicks said

“Goddamn right I remember,” Eli Stearns said.

Hicks hit him in the mouth. He felt teeth give against his fist and the man was instantly knocked from the stool, unable to break his fall as he dropped to the floor. He landed on his shoulder and then rolled over on his back, both his hands clutching his mouth. Blood was coming through his fingers and he was screaming and gargling, muffled by his palms. Hicks stepped back and kicked the man in the ribs. Then stepped back again and kicked him in the groin. The man curled and bellowed from his bloody mouth, his hands now holding his testicles. Hicks dropped to one knee and grabbed the man’s thinning hair and banged his head up and down on the floor, the sound a rhythmic thump, thump, thump on the wooden boards. Hicks stood and looked at his own hands, saw there was blood on them and leaned back down to wipe them clean on the front of the man’s shirt. Still bent over and out of habit, he went for his knife in his back pocket, but they had taken it from him when they arrested him. He stood again and was about to leave when he returned to the man on the floor and launched a kick into his side that forced an almost inaudible moan carried out on a thick spray of bloody breath. Hicks turned again and walked across the room to leave.

Something Discovered (Funerals and Weddings Series Book 2) by Bernadette Marie #Romance #Giveaway @GoddessFish

Sometimes coming home opens the door to discovering something new.

After Coach Diaz’s funeral, Alex Burke realized there was nothing left for him in Boston, especially after he found out his girlfriend had moved on. Moving back to Colorado, and bonding with his college friends, is what Alex needed to get his life back in order.

Catherine Anderson grew up in the shadow of Coach Diaz’s daughter. The best friend that was always overlooked, Catherine had reservations about the men who had been Coach’s Fabulous Five, especially Alex Burke who always had eyes for Rachel, and didn’t even know Catherine existed.

Coming together to mutually help Rachel through hard times, Catherine and Alex realize they’d had eyes for one another back when. Perhaps now that Alex was home, it would be a good time to explore an adult relationship. But when news out of Boston rocks his world, it just might be more than Catherine can handle.

Alex took the brush from her and set it on top of the open can of paint. “Do you dance?”

Now he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer. Her eyes were wide as she studied him. She might have thought he was crazy, but she wasn’t pushing him away.

A few measures later, she finally lifted her arms and swayed with him.

“This is silly,” she chuckled shaking her head.

“Spontaneous,” he corrected as he pulled her a little closer. “It’s supposed to be romantic, right? Stopping what you’re doing and dancing?”

Her eyes went wide. “Are you trying to be romantic?”

“Am I not good at it?”

Catherine blinked and he could see her lip tremble. “I asked you first,” she said and her voice shook.

Alex slowed his sway. Maybe he was trying to be romantic. Maybe that was why he felt the need to show up at her house with flowers and wine.

He slowed even more, until they were simply standing in the bathroom—his hands on her hips, her arms around his neck.

“I guess I am,” he said looking down into her blue eyes.

Catherine swallowed hard and ran her tongue across her pink lips. “Then I guess you’re good at it.”

The ball was back in his court, he decided. He could let go of her and pick up the paint roller, or he could take the next step and see what happened.

Catherine’s fingers began to make circles at the nape of his neck, and now he trembled.

Lowering his mouth, until his was only a breath from hers, he stopped and locked eyes with her. Her baby blues were soft before they disappeared behind her eyelids, and he knew then she wanted the kiss he was contemplating as much as he did.

One year later…

Dante pulled into the Brass Pole parking lot for his nightly shift. For the last year, he’d worked his ass off to prove to the owner, Bruce, that he could do more than look menacing at the door. He didn’t mind being a bouncer, but he’d rather work steadily with the books. Bruce allowed him to fix the mistakes in the books twice a week, but Dante preferred his time in the office, rather than at the door. The impulse to steal money never quite left him, but there wasn’t the ready cash like at his family’s clubs. Besides, he needed the job and responsibility.

He left his clunker of a car and walked into the club. Bruce stood behind the bar, rather than in his usual spot with the bouncers.

“Bruce.” Dante clocked in. “Where’s Mick? Out again?” The regular bartender wasn’t always reliable unless he was behind the bar.

“He quit. Met a girl in Sutton and left. Something about the great peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,” Bruce said. “I have no idea what the hell that means, but it’s got to be code for something. That man always talks in code about sex.” He rinsed glasses, then left them on the towel.

“Could be.” He’d never heard of sex referred to as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but whatever. “Do you have someone lined up as a replacement?”

“Not yet. I’ve got some guys coming in for interviews tomorrow.” Bruce wiped a tall-boy glass. “I’d have you fill in, but I’m sending you upstairs.”

“You are?” He’d graduated to doing the books those two nights, but hadn’t tended bar in six months.

“The books are fine and can wait another night. I’ll be down here at the bar because you’re not supposed to be this close to booze. No, I’m going to have you serve upstairs. Nothing stronger than soft drinks, so it’s not hard. Besides, I trust you up there. Everyone wants to go up there to watch the action, and I know you’ll actually do the job,” Bruce said.

“Oh, you know it?” He’d do exactly what he was told to do because he needed to prove to himself and everyone else that he could handle the job.

“You’ll give me lip, but you’ll do the job.”

YELLOW EYES by Gale Stanley #shifters @evernightpub #MFRWsteam

Welcome to The MFRW Steam hop, a monthly event hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers. If you like spicy romance, you’re in the right place.

My story is from the anthology - Bad Alpha Manlove Edition published by Evernight Publishing.

Bad Alpha features a select collection of stories with shifters so ruthless they will stop at nothing to protect their pack. These aren't sugar-and-spice heroes. Our alphas are feared, inked, and don’t ask questions first. They take what they want, never give in to their enemies, and think love is for the weak—until they meet their mate. Are you ready to learn how to tame a savage heart?

YELLOW EYES by Gale Stanley

BLURB

The brutal war between shifters and humans is over, but each side still sees the other as a threat.

The only thing they can agree on, is that they can’t agree. Humans live east of the bridge, shifters live west.

Camden is a half-breed, the product of a rape that happened during the war. Neither side wants him, but he lives with his human mother. The night she dies, Camden goes west looking for revenge. He knows he won’t find his father, and he’ll probably get himself killed, but he doesn’t care. As long as he takes a shifter with him, he’ll die happy.

Wyat is alpha of the pack living in the west. He’s a warrior who believes in separation of the races. Then on the night of the full moon, he discovers a half-breed hiding in the alley. The man’s scent makes him burn with lust, and against his better judgement, he takes him home—and discovers that sleeping with the enemy might just lead to a better future.

TEASERs

Meet Wyat, my yellow-eyed alpha shifter.

This is the beginning of YELLOW EYES ~

Wyat stepped out of the shower and snagged an old towel, pulling the rusty hook and a piece of plaster along with it. He made a mental note on his to-do list, then he tossed the hook and rubbed himself down. The friction of stiff, scratchy fabric on flesh set off sparks that made him throw back his head and howl.

The big man gave himself a squeeze and a shake, but didn’t bother to tuck himself in. A few steps brought him uncomfortably close to Camden’s hiding spot.

****

Meet Camden, my half-breed hero.

This is Camden’s first glimpse of Wyat.

Camden’s gaze slid up a pair of powerful thighs encased in denim, and got no further than the shifter’s perfect cock. Curving up from its dark nest, it swelled with arousal and demanded attention. The man fisted the root and tugged, milking a bit of precum from the slit.

A robust, musky scent filled Camden’s nostrils, and imprinted on his brain. Suddenly, he had to have that big, warm cock in his mouth. It wouldn’t take much to close the distance between them, and lap up those glistening beads of fluid.
