But going after the truth means Jessie soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who wants that truth to stay buried with her father.

Protecting Jessie Kegan is a job bodyguard Brandon Garrett can’t refuse. Jessie isn’t just a client at Maximum Security—she’s the sister of his best friend, Danny, killed in Afghanistan. With dangerous forces gunning for Jessie from every angle, keeping her safe will mean keeping her close and Bran finds their mutual attraction growing, though being Danny’s sister puts Jessie out of bounds.

“Call and cancel,” he said. “I’ve got a suite for us at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. It’s up in the hills not far from Fort Carson.” Apparently she hadn’t figured out that separate hotel rooms weren’t an option. People had been shooting at her. He wasn’t letting her get that far away.

“It’s an hour drive from there to the Depot,” he said, opening the passenger door. “But we’ll also be spending time at the base, which is fairly close, so we might as well stay somewhere nice.”

“You’re spending a lot of money. I didn’t expect that. I’ll find a way to repay you.”

He stopped walking and turned back. “I told you before--I owe your brother my life. You don’t owe me anything and especially not money. I’ve got plenty of it, far more than we’ll need.” He stared down at her. “All right?”

She shrugged. “I guess so.” She was a foot shorter than he was, petite, with a trim figure, but she wasn’t frail. He usually went for tall, buxom women. They just seemed less fragile, a better fit for a guy his size. But there was something about Jessie that drew him.

“No more talk about money,” he said to make the point. “Okay?”

Her chin went up. “Fine.”

He bit back a smile. She was really cute. Too bad she didn’t look more like her silver-haired father and less like her brother, whose good-looks appealed to women around the world.

They belted themselves into their seats and he started the engine.

“You don’t want to talk about the money you’re spending,” she said. “So what do you want to talk about? The case, I hope.”

He grinned. “Why don’t we talk about why you don’t have a serious boyfriend. That should be interesting.”

Instead of the snarky remark he expected, Jessie’s face went pale. She glanced out the window. “It’s not a good story.”

The Baby Contract by Nan Reinhardt #Romance #Giveaway @GoddessFish

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Nan Reinhardt will be awarding a set of 6 handmade wineglass charms and a $10 Starbucks gift card. (USA only) to 5 randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

She wants a baby…he wants a family

Firefighter and paramedic Tierney Ashton has always been a bold adventurer, but at thirty-four she longs to embark on a new adventure—motherhood. But who will be the father? Although financially challenging, a sperm bank appears to be her best option. That is, until she shares her dream with her long-time pal, Brendan Flaherty.

Government analyst and world traveler Brendan Flaherty returns home to River’s Edge to help out at his family’s thriving winery and his brother’s new community theater. He also plans to finally achieve his lifelong goal of writing a novel. But when Tierney shares her wish, Bren offers to be her baby daddy—with one condition. Marriage.

It seems like a perfect contract, but will love get in the way?

This could work.

She wasn’t involved with anyone and neither was he. Fact was, his job kept him so busy with late nights and travel and meetings all over the world, it had been hard to maintain much of a romantic relationship with anyone in DC. Since he’d been home, he’d dated a little, but that spark he’d waited for all his life had yet to materialize.

However, he truly meant what he’d said to Tierney. “Why?” he repeated with a bit more force. “Why is it any crazier than picking a father for your baby off a website?”

Tierney’s eyes narrowed. “You would do that? Go to Nell’s with me, collect a... a sample, and let her inseminate me? Just like that?”

Brendan nearly had to pick his jaw up off the table. That’s what she thinks I'm suggesting? How could she have known him for her whole life and believe for one moment that he’d simply give her his... his... Oh, good Lord. And then what? Walk away? He ran one hand over his face “Of course not!”

She sat up straighter. “Then what, Bren? Because, honestly, right now, that’s all I’m looking for.”

“Well, we... I... I-I can’t do that.” He was floundering, which frustrated him because he rarely floundered. He made presentations regularly to large groups of highly placed government officials all over the world. He could explain the intricacies of diplomacy, answer questions, and meet-and-greet in seven different languages. Now, he was stuttering in front of a woman he’d known since they were both kids. Who knew the most awkward moment of his life would be with Tee? Go figure.

Dammit.

“We had a job. We did it. It’s done,” he said with a gravelly undercurrent in his voice.

It wasn’t done. Whatever had been there had left a visible, emotional mark on Noah. How had I missed it before?

“That doesn’t change who you are, what makes you a good person. In fact, I’m betting some of the reasons you signed up was what makes you that guy.”

“You sound like my mom. When I couldn’t stand being at home, she understood. I left, quit taking all the pills, and drove until I couldn’t anymore. I stopped at a gas station and saw a delivery girl dropping off parts to the exhaust shop in the back.”

“Jessup’s?” There was only one exhaust shop that Dad did custom welding for.

“Yeah.”

And only one delivery girl. “Me?”

“Yup.”

He was full of surprises.

Adam, a young alcoholic, slowly descends into madness while dealing with the psychological scars of childhood trauma which are reawakened when his son and wife die in a car accident that he feels he is responsible for. After a failed suicide attempt, and more group meetings that he can mention. Adam hears a rumor of a Haunted Island off the Coast of Maine, where “if someone wants it bad enough” they could be reunited with a lost loved one. In his desperate attempt to connect with the ghost of his four-and-a half year old son, he decides to go there, to Dagger Island, desperate to apologize to, or be condemned by, his young son. Adam is not sure what he deserves or even which of these he wants more. While staying in a crumbling old boarding house, he becomes involved with a beautiful and manipulative ghost who has spent 60 years tormenting the now elderly man who was her lover, and ultimately her murderer. The three of them create a “Menage-a-Guilt" as they all come to terms with what it is that ties them so emotionally to their memories and their very “existence”.Beautiful, Frightening, and Silent is a poetic fever dream of grief, love, and the terrifying ways that obsession can change who we are.

He walks up the stairs, the sound of his cane echoes loudly with each uneven but heavy impact. The sound travels out and finds its way back to him. It reverberates into his ears, and he can feel it on his skin like a kiss. Each step he takes feels like love. It is almost enough for him to forget the rest of it and let it all go.

As he looks down the upstairs hallway, he sees that every door is open to him. He looks in the rooms and sees the white sheets covering most surfaces. He wonders if these are the ghosts that people are taking about. Are they all just memory filled objects covered and hidden away?

He understands now that Ben is under one of those sheets. He is hidden away in one of these rooms for safe keeping. Hiding in plain sight, for only Adam to find him.

Adam walks into a room at the end of the hall. The one furthest from his own. The air in that room is thick with perfume and dust that has been baked to a ripe stuffiness over the years. It's a mother's, or a grandmother's room. You can feel it. The judgement and condemnation make him feel slightly nauseated. The furniture and mirrors are all covered in sheets. The shutters on the widow are closed and only sharp slices of light penetrate between the slats. As he walks through them, they hit his skin like little cuts. Each slice is quick and shallow the way the paper would cut at skin as he would grade his student’s papers while drunk.

He walks around the room and the light is in and out of his eye like a strobe. He sees the things under the sheets begin to dance a little and squirm. He hears breathing. It is coming from the far corner of the room. Something or someone is huddled in the nook near the fireplace. He sees the small hand of a boy peeking out from under the sheet, trying with fierce four-year-old determination to keep it in place. Benny Boy wants to win this game of hide-and-seek. The once white sheet is covered with brownish red water stains. It looks like blood that someone has spent years trying in vain to wash. In the end they are still dirty and stained with tears.

"Ben?" Adam calls softly. The air from his voice makes the dust particles dance in the fragmented light.

He hears a giggle and knows he was right. He is here. Adam begins to understand the game now.

"I wonder where Benny Boy is?" He feigns a lighthearted-ness. He knows he can't make it seem like Ben is in trouble for being in this room. This is most obviously not a room where a boy should play or hide which makes it even more appealing for a child.

"Is he under the bed?" Adam knows of course he isn't there, but in his heart, he needs Ben to realize he is good at the game and that he was able to trick his dad.

Adam can't wait to rip the sheet off him and to hear Ben scream with giggles. He wants to scoop him up and say, "There you are Benny Boy, I didn't know if I would be able to find you."

He walks slowly to the corner. If Ben is giggling again it is drowned out by a low moaning of the foghorn. Adam uses that distraction to take a few steps closer to the corner. There is no silent way for Adam to walk, no possible way for him to surprise Ben.

His had reaches out, it tremors in anticipation and fear. He pauses. "Ben?" he waits for an answer or a giggle or even a breath. There is just silence, of course there wouldn’t be a breath.

"Benny Boy?" He whispers even quieter. He leans in close to the sheet. He doesn't hear anything, but he swears he can feel the air flinch away from him as he leans in close.

New Release! Through the Lens by @AdrianaKraft #EroticRomance #Giveaway

About Our Story
Does your family history contain scandal? Ours does, as recently as my mother’s grandfather, who was born a bastard in an era when that status carried far more stigma than now. His mother – a logger’s daughter who served as a camp cook – was shunned and shamed for much of her life. On the other side, my husband’s grandfather was a bigamist. A threshing crew foreman in the early 1900s, he married and had children in Missouri, then married again in Kansas. My husband’s grandmother divorced him when she learned of the other family; their son, my husband’s father, was ten years old.
We blessed—or perhaps cursed—our Through the Lens heroine with elements of these scandals. Naturally, she’s heard some of the stories. Through the Lens chronicles her struggle with these long-forgotten roots. Will she claim them, or run the other way?

Blurb
Prairie roots can be deceptive. Will Ellen Jeffers cling to the sedate past that’s familiar, or will she embrace a different version of her history—one that includes tragedy, scandal, fortitude, and freedom?
It’s 2002, and South Dakota third grade teacher Ellen Jeffers has signed up for a photography summer course and assistantship at an art academy in Minneapolis. Thirty-three, divorced for nearly a decade from her college boyfriend, she’s not seeking major change. She just hopes the course will enhance her teaching skills and her resume.
Aaron Brewster comes from privilege, and he has used that status to flaunt his family’s values and carve out a successful career as a photographer specializing in black and white erotic portraiture. Has he ever loved? His love is for beauty, sensuality, eroticism. His new uptight teaching assistant will never fit that vision. Should he send her packing? For reasons he cannot fathom, he takes her on as a challenge.
Aaron’s frontal assault shocks Ellen, but it also triggers something deep inside she’s never been willing to acknowledge. Is her beloved prairie a safe refuge, or will it become a crucible for transformation? The choice is not merely Ellen’s.

Tina never spoke a word. She half perched on the stool and raised her arms above her head with a fan in each hand, then held that pose and pouted at the class.
“Remember to look through your cameras,” Aaron said. “This isn’t a strip show.”
Ellen gasped and ducked behind her camera. By the time she had Tina in focus, Tina had placed the fans in one hand by her side, and her other hand was tucked in under her robe, probably covering a breast. Ellen swallowed as she heard cameras clicking around her. Tina smiled at her as she snapped a picture.
Ellen tried to breathe as Tina worked through a series of poses showing leg, lifting her long black hair above her head, sliding a hand suggestively under the robe and up a thigh.
Tina’s eyes sparkled. She stuck her tongue out at the group before turning to face away from them. Slowly the robe slid down to her waist. Tina held that pose as cameras clicked, and then the robe fell to the floor.
Ellen inhaled sharply as Tina bent over the stool, showing off a tight rump and sculpted thighs and legs. Before she could focus, Tina had moved a fan to shield her butt from view. There was a groan from the class.
“Sometimes subtle is more erotic,” Aaron pointed out. “And sometimes not.”
Tina turned around to face the group with the fan hiding her loins. Her long hair hid one breast. The other stood free and open to view. Its nipple stood at attention. Tina teased it with a strand of hair.
Ellen focused her lens on the nipple until it nearly filled her viewfinder.
“Goodness,” she muttered under her breath. It was as if the nipple winked at her. It was still tightening. Did that fleshy nodule know it had her entire attention? She clicked off several shots. Her own nipples were straining.
“You doing okay?”
She didn’t trust herself to take her attention off the camera to look at Aaron.

A demon deer and a ghost cat. Sibling rivalry and sexual awakening. Self-image and self-confidence. The chance for an offworlder to breathe free at last on a new planet. Those are just some of the diverse themes of these remarkable stories. Some endings are happy, some are sad, and some are intriguingly open-ended. But once you step inside the author’s world, you cannot emerge unmoved.

Read an Excerpt from "A Temporary Perspective"

Sloane had ordered Chinese take–out, a treat on their fixed income. Josh loved eggrolls, and his smile upon seeing the containers made her day.

After clearing the dishes and stowing the leftovers in the fridge, Sloane noticed Josh watching her.

“Josh, what is it?”

“Can I talk to you?”

“Sure, honey.” She put her hands in her lap to hide her nervous fidgeting.

“Mom, now that I’m in 8th grade, I’ve been thinking about what I want to do after high school.”

“You mean, like college?”

“Kind of. But not really. Mom, I want to join the military.”

Sloane stopped fidgeting, shocked. This wasn’t how the conversation should go, she thought. He was supposed to say something different. “Mom, I want to learn all about computers.” Or “Mom, I want to run my own business.” But the military? She must have looked confused, because she saw the barest flick of an eye roll from her usually respectful and stoic son.

“The military?” she asked.

“Yes, the Army—the Reserve Officer Training Corps, actually. It starts in 9th grade.”

Sloane didn’t know how to respond. Part of her was relieved, and the other part wasn’t happy at all. “That means you’ll be going away a lot.”

“Not until after high school,” he said. “Besides, Juan and Mark are joining ROTC, too.”

“Sounds like you’ve done your homework on this one,” she said. “I’ve tried my best to raise you to make good decisions and be practical.”

They sat in silence at the dining table. Sloane couldn’t help finding the irony in what was clearly her own inaccurate thinking. Josh wasn’t even thinking of her as an embarrassment or of himself as the only son of an abandoned single mother who was going blind.

“It could be dangerous,” she said. “I’ll worry.”

“Mom, it’s what I want. There are kids who get all messed up just crossing the street.”

Sloane shook her head in defeat. There was no arguing with the invincibility of youth.

Everyone dreams.

All Saxon Zynn wanted to do was dream, not for himself, but for everyone. Back in 2037, Saxon stated, ‘Dreaming is a reality to be experienced.' A decade of research later and his Dream Immersion technology is poised to become the major entertainment medium of the 21st century, but will unforeseen obstacles prevent him from achieving his purpose?

Dream Phaze is about the inception of engineered dreams and the evolution of indulgence. Set at the crossroads of alternative realities in the near future, it plunges into a world where every human desire, no matter how heroic or evil, can be fulfilled… dreaming just became an adventure.

Murmurs rippled around the boardroom. Saxon threw a worried look at Margo, but her sculpted face evaded his gaze. He knew Margo was concerned as she fidgeted with her manicured fingernails.

‘What does that mean for ZynnComm, Walt?’ Alfred asked.

‘I’ll get to that, Alfred. Needless to say, the Eringa Project is on hold, indefinitely.’ He stopped pacing. ‘Staff at one of our casinos, the Iridium in Moscow, have been caught allegedly manipulating gaming machines, accused of laundering large sums of money, and involvement in illegal drug transactions. The Kremlin wants to close the Iridium and our four other casinos across Russia. We’re expecting both pieces of information will be made public sometime today. A devastating blow for the corporation. We’ll be in damage control, and I’m flying to Sydney after this meeting for the anticipated media frenzy.’

More discussion erupted around the room as Walt continued his walk.

‘This morning before I arrived at the facility, I had the weight of the planets on my shoulders ladies and gentlemen–until I experienced the future.’ Walt continued, now fixated on Saxon, ‘Dr Saxon Zynn, our dream master, will revive the Tremaine Group with our Dream Immersion Platform and Gatekeeper of Dreams authoring technology. We will return to our glory days. Our testing feedback, along with my personal experience this morning, is telling me, nay shouting at me, we are going to transform entertainment as we know it. We are on the verge of a massive entertainment revolution that will fuel public imagination. Everyone will want what we are selling!’

Spontaneous cheers and applause erupted around the room. Saxon glanced at Margo, who was no longer playing with her fingernails, instead wearing her beguiling proud of you smile.

Book Blast: Never Enough by Kristina M. Sanchez #Romance #Giveaway @GoddessFish

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Kristina M. Sanchez will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

At thirty-seven, Valentin Belmonte returned to his mother’s house with his tail between his legs. No surprise there. His life had been a long line of bad choices, failures, and trouble. Also returning home, freshly graduated and on the hunt for a job, was Mina Toussaint, the orphan Val’s mother and stepfather had taken in when he was already grown. She’d been the only person who’d ever really liked him, but he’d screwed that up a long time ago.

Mina’s adoptive family had treated her like the perfect princess and little girl they always wanted. Val was the only one who’d ever seen her for who she really was; she’d never wanted to be a princess. But after what happened when she was sixteen, she thought she hated him. Now, six years later, things were different. She wasn’t the child she’d been when she got so angry. The trouble was that Val hadn’t changed. He still saw her.

Frankly, he saw too much.

Mina was coming in the opposite door from the garage, fast-food bags in hand. He stopped. She stopped. They stared at each other.

Christ.

She’d been sixteen the last time they were face to face, her furious and him trying to explain why he had to leave. He’d come home for Christmas once, three years ago, but she’d made an excuse to go home with one of her friends for the holiday break instead.

Running into her wasn’t what stunned him, though. That was expected. What wasn’t expected was, well…

She was stunning. Smoking hot. She was all hourglass curves; plump, perfect breasts; and straight brown hair sticking out from under a beanie. She had her glasses on for once, and that did things to him. His body, his blood, sparked with an awareness that was familiar—he was a red-blooded man, after all—and yet foreign.

About the Author Kristina M. Sanchez began her life-long love of writing as a small, insomniac child, making up stories about Bugs Bunny to occupy herself when everyone in the house was asleep. She lives now in Southern California with two cats and an enchanting hurricane—err—toddler. An enchanting, smarty-pants, bewildering toddler. Kristina is an asexual, happily single mother by choice. You might think that’s a weird kind of person to be writing romance novels, but the best science-fiction writers have never been to space, so there you go.

The Beta's Spitfire ~ she ignites a fire that makes his wolf sit up and howl

The Beta's Spitfire (Utopia 2) by Gale Stanley

Blurb

Samson:
Levi and I have always been best friends. Now he’s the pack Alpha and I’m his beta, a.k.a. the man who cleans up after his shit storms. This one is a doozy. He dumped his intended bride, and now it’s my job to take care of her while he goes off to find his soulmate. Delilah is beautiful, a real spitfire, and completely off limits. But she ignites a fire that makes my wolf sit up and howl.

Delilah:
I was meant to be the mate of an Alpha, so l accepted an arranged marriage with Levi. But the arrogant jerk dumped me right before the wedding. I’m no damsel in distress, so I took off for New York to live a life of independence. Along the way, I was kidnapped and my situation became desperate. When Samson came to my rescue, I never expected him to claim me for himself.

Excerpt

Samson

“I don’t want to be your babysitter.” I took my eyes off the road to look at Delilah. We made eye contact at exactly the same time and the connection was so powerful, I forgot where I was. I thought of all the dirty things I wanted to do to her.

“Watch out!”

Delilah grabbed the wheel and steered us back to our lane. I’d narrowly missed a head-on with an eighteen-wheeler. I took in a deep breath and steadied myself. “S-s-s-sorry.”

“No harm done. So, you don’t want to be my babysitter. What do you want?”

I want to be your lover, your mate, your partner. “I want to be your friend.”

“You are my friend, Samson. You’re the only one I trust to get me home. Milo just wants to fuck me.”

I felt my face grow hot. I’d just been thinking the same thing. She was just so damn gorgeous, so tempting. But unlike Milo, I would never hit on her. “Well, you don’t have to worry about that with me.”

Delilah

Too bad. “Yes, you’re a perfect gentleman.”

Despite my independence, I’d had little experience with men. She-wolves were supposed to wait for marriage and I’d been promised to an Alpha. In the past, I’d been tempted to have sex just to spite my father, but I’d never met anyone I deemed worthy of taking my virginity. Until now.
Why did it have to be a beta who woke butterflies in my stomach? He stared at me as if he wanted to eat me alive, and it was hot as hell. His scent, all male and oh so seductive, made me drool. Amazing. I only drooled when I smelled the scent of a fresh kill. I love deer meat. It really surprised me that I’d succumbed so easily to Samson’s powerful sexuality. I don’t think he realized how delicious he was. He had the kind of body that any woman would appreciate. That thought gave me pause. I didn’t want to think of him with someone else. I wanted him all to myself. I wanted my first time to be
with him. Images of our naked bodies grinding together in passion flitted through my mind.
