“What’s on your mind?” he asked after I’d been standing at the kettle long after it had boiled.

“Ah…” I muttered, caught off guard and not able to come up with a ready answer. Sensing my indecision, he turned me around then lifted me onto the kitchen bench, coming to stand between my legs. In this position, I was at his height, and I appreciated how handsome he was at this angle. His hair was even more mussed than usual, and I remembered I’d had my hands in it, holding him close as he’d made me come. His eyes looked into mine, and they were open and appreciative with a hint of a smile. He wasn’t laughing at me, but I sensed he knew the direction of my thoughts.

“Tell me what you want, Kate,” he said quietly as his gaze dropped to my lips.

“You. I want you. And I want you to stay, but I don’t know what to do about it.” The words fell out of my mouth as I looked at his lips that were now giving me a sexy smile.

“Why don’t you know what to do? Ask me.”

“You might think I’m easy.”

“Never.”

“You might think I’m going to put out, and I want to but I… maybe… don’t know what I’m doing. And I think you do,” I said. I didn’t see the point in lying. He could be trusted with the truth.

“Well, what happens if I say yes? Do you think I’m easy and will put out?” he murmured as he rubbed my thighs.

“Of course not,” I answered.

“And how do you know I know what I’m doing?”

“Because I’m on fire when you look at me, and when you touch me, I’m only seconds away from coming apart.”

As I said this, he sucked in a breath, like what I said hit a target he didn’t know he had.

“Will you stay with me?” I whispered right before I kissed him. It started slow and sweet, until his tongue slipped into my mouth, and tangled with mine. Then he increased the intensity. Before long I was clinging to him, needing more, desperate for contact.

About the Author: As a girl growing up in Australia, Laura was lost in the world of Anne of Green Gables and Little Women. During high school, volleyball dominated her life. There had to be something positive about being 6’1” with red hair. Representing Australia from a young age she eventually took a scholarship at the University of Iowa. Living in America and being a full time athlete in a college town was an eye-opening experience and lots of fun (from what she can remember). #gohawkeyes

Returning from the States, her career took a different turn as she started working at the Red Cross and completed her Masters of Law in Human Rights. As one of the few non-lawyers in the class, her essays were far more floral than the rest, something that caused the discerning professors to shake their heads. Through working and studying, she realised there are other ways to win hearts and minds.

While she’s spent the last 14 years as an advocate against poverty and homelessness, the desire to change the world through storytelling has only got stronger. She now lives in the Alpine Valleys of North East Victoria, Australia with her husband, daughter, son, two dogs and seven chooks. When she’s not doing the whole mum thing, working at a homelessness agency, renovating her farmhouse, or trying to do laundry bleary-eyed at midnight, she is writing.

Book Tour: Alice, a Memoir by Alice Gilmore #NonFiction #Giveaway @GoddessFish

Alice, a Memoir
by Alice Gilmore

BLURB:

Few, if anyone, could have had a life like Alice Gilmore. It was almost unbelievable yet carried on under the cover of a respectable middle-class existence.

You might strongly disapprove of what she did, but Alice was determined. She overcame insurmountable obstacles to keep the love she longed for.

Her single-minded fight to live out her love makes a gripping, riveting story that one eminent literary person called ‘staggeringly readable’. It is shocking. Her methods will upset some, but are you with her or against her? Your decision.

This is no misery memoir. It’s a story told with joy, wit and fervour – the astonishing story of the overwhelming love Alice Gilmour was determined to live out.

Excerpt Three:

And then one day he was gone.

A whey-faced professor and his wife, both good friends, knocked on my door and practically pushed me back into the house out of sight of anyone (not that anyone could see our front door from the road) to tell me that David had been shot dead while giving a lecture at the university. A student had come into the room waving a gun and looking for some girl he loved who had dumped him in favour of a female and then come out about her lesbianism. The gunman, already clearly unbalanced, had got a lot of ribbing about his inadequacy in causing her to change sides, so he was after both of them. They were in David’s lecture. He wanted to shoot them in front of the whole class, lesbian seducer first, former girlfriend to watch it before getting hers. All this came out later when it emerged that he had told his roommate what he was going to do and the wretched roommate had simply not taken this wimp seriously. He didn’t even own a gun but that was quickly remedied with some dollars and a driver’s licence.

David knew the gunman well and as people dived for cover suggested he sit down if he had come for the lecture. He was reported as saying, ‘Howie, why don’t you give that to me, sit down and pay attention? You could use some of what we’re dealing with here.’ When this failed he stood between the gunman and the students and continued to try to talk him down. He was, apparently, having some success when a female voice shouted in fear, ‘Why don’t you fuck off, you inadequate creep?’

If you want to know about my life and background read this book. I can scarcely add to what I have written about myself in there. I earnestly hope that the rest of my life is too uneventful to even consider writing anything else, I am no novelist. The life I have described was full enough and rich enough for me. God knows what I would come out with if I had to invent. If you find you need a good chef I shall consider anything not too energetic – which rules out most jobs in the kitchen.

Cover Reveal: RENEGADE (DEVIL’S BONEYARD MC) by HARLEY WYLDE #MCromance #bikerbooks @ChangelingPress

Publisher: Changeling Press
Cover Artist: Bryan Keller
Release Date: September 2019

My past taught me family means pain.
I don’t want one, other than my club.
But fate has other plans.
Darby: At fifteen, I thought I knew everything. Having been in foster care all my life, not much scared me. I’d already faced monsters parading around as upstanding citizens. But life hadn’t prepared me for a biker who would lure me in, kidnap me, and abuse me for five years. I got Fawn out of it, my precious girl, and a lot of bad memories. Being tossed into a dumpster and left to die wasn’t at the top of my list, but Renegade found me. I’ve never had a man be kind to me or my daughter before -- especially not a biker -- and I’m not sure what to think. I want to trust him, but I don’t want to give him my heart only to have him turn out like every other man I’ve ever known. It would break me.

Renegade: I lost my family a long time ago, and I vowed I’d never have another. I still have Nikki, my baby sis, and that’s enough. My club is a family, but that’s different. I trust them, and in my own way I love them, but it’s not the same as having a wife and kids. I’ll never go down that path. Then I found Fawn and her mother, Darby, thrown away like unwanted trash. Yeah, Fate’s laughing her ass off right now. They’re in my home, and slowly worming their way under my skin. Hearing their story is enough to make my blood boil and send rage flooding through me. I’ll exact revenge for all they’ve suffered, and then they’ll truly be free, able to move on without fear of being taken again. Except… I might not want to let them go.

WARNING: This story contains violence, bad language, and really hot sex. While there are abuse themes, nothing is told in great detail.

Coming to Changeling Press on September 6th
and online retailers September 13th

A Virtual Book Tour: In Pursuit of Perfection by Jacki Kelly #Romance #Giveaway @GoddessFish

BLURB:

The next man in Macy Rollins’s life must be perfect. She’s had enough impostors and isn’t willing to settle for anything less. All she has to do is get through the company contract negotiation season and she will get that promotion she has been working so hard for. Avery Malveaux – one of Philadelphia’s most eligible bachelors – has been hired to work with her as legal counsel for the company. From the moment they are forced to work together tensions are high and expectations are low. He questions her ability, she questions his intentions. After Macy is suspected in an accounting shortage, she accuses Avery of betraying her confidence. Has she once again been deceived by a man she thought she could trust? Can she clear her name and win her job back? And can there be any hope for Macy’s pursuit of perfection.

Excerpt Three:

From the moment Macy agreed to go out with Avery, she couldn’t focus on any of the important things. Instead of pursuing Michelle, she thought about what to wear. Instead of rechecking the few audit documents she had, she was wondering what she and Avery would talk about. This was a real date. Everything up to now was only practice. Dating Avery was playing with an open flame.

She closed her eyes and drew in a deep breath. All her thoughts whirled around the hurt little girl her father left standing in the doorway. That was the 202 area code number that kept showing up on her phone. She sighed.
Brian had been too young to understand the destruction their father had caused. But she couldn’t forget, and she couldn’t forgive.

The intoxicating expression on his face made her heart thump harder. There were good reasons to pull away from him. But she couldn’t. As risky as being with Avery was, she couldn’t walk away. She needed to forget about the past, to stop glancing backward and focus on the offerings of the future. Maybe now was the perfect time to open the lock on her heart.

The HR Director shook his head. “That’s not a possibility.”

For a moment the room was quiet. There had to be something she could say to make this right. “How soon—”

“Immediately. We’d like you to gather anything personal from your office that you’d like to take home with you and exit the building.”

She sat up straighter in the chair. “It sounds like you’re firing me.”
“Until we have finished our investigation, please do not return to the building.” He stood. The meeting was over.

Author Interview

What do you do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing I’m reading or walking the dog. In the spring and summer, I’m in the garden, keeping the weeds away from my flowers. I also love playing golf with my husband.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I’m a plotter. I don’t start writing until I’ve worked out the story from beginning, middle and end. Once I start writing, I try not to edit until I’ve finished, instead I keep story notes in a booklet. Once the book is complete then I go back and make the changes. If I stop to edit as I write it shuts down my creative process.

Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
Yes, of course. I have a book that I’ve decided to set aside for now because it’s just not quite right. I’ve tweaked it several times, but there are still some holes in the plot that I need to fix. So for now, it’s in a drawer. I’ll come back to it one day, when I can figure out how to make it right.

What project are you working on now?
Oh, I have more ideas than I have time. Next up, I’d like to do another book to follow up ‘In Pursuit of Perfection. I already have a title – In Pursuit of Payback. I have another romantic suspense coming out later this year, entitled Trouble in Paradise. And then, I want to work on a women’s fiction. I have an idea that I’ve been toying with for a few years and it’s time to get it on paper.

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
The best advice I could give an aspiring writer would be to keep on writing. No matter what, just write. Finish a book, then start working on the next one. The more you write the better you’ll get. The worst advice is all the rules I’ve heard quoted – don’t use adverbs, don’t use clichés, watch your backstory, show vs. tell. While all of these things are true in general, if you do them well, then you can get away with it. Good writing is good writing.

EXCERPT:

Brewer stood in the doorway, his gaze flitting over my face as he stepped inside my prison.
My heart spasmed -- and that damn tingle between my thighs roared to life. I scowled.
Chin tilted up, I held his blue eyed stare, trying to focus on what he’d done, the family he’d taken from me, rather than the arousal he’d woken inside my core.
A twinkle lit his eye and twitched his lips peeking from his full beard -- a beard that appeared silky, bringing to mind an image of his dark head between my thighs. Would his facial hair tickle? Scrape and mark my skin?
I swallowed and jerked my focus back up to his eyes, determined to keep silent no matter what he said -- or did.
He caved from the silence between us first, expelling a heavy exhale, his shoulders relaxing the slightest bit. “What’s your name?”
“Eat shit.”
His lips quirked as though to smirk, but flat lined. “Bet you got your ass bullied for that name while growing up.”
“Fuck off.”
“I’d rather fuck you.”
My breath caught -- and Brewer blinked as though his words had escaped unintended. He stood a few feet in front of me, doing nothing to hide the cock swelling inside his leathers. Long and hard…
The tingle of arousal morphed into pure wetness, dampening my panties in the span of a single breath as we stared at one another, our fogging breaths loud in the stillness.
“Goddamnit.” Brewer scrubbed a hand down over his face and beard while I attempted to swallow the dryness from my throat. He spun and left without another word, leaving my upper body unwrapped.
My arousal kept me warm for all of two minutes before my teeth began to chatter.
Fucking asshole couldn’t handle the sexual tension, the complication of what that brought to our situation. He fled like a pansy-ass.
Better that than rape me
“Fuck,” I muttered, eyes clenching shut against the thought of him thrusting into my body. My pussy spasmed, deepening my frown. I hadn’t let a man’s dick near me in over three years -- and I wasn’t about to let some Stockholm syndrome make me lenient. No matter how fucking hot said man might be.
He’d killed my team, so given the chance, I would kill him.

Anna has plans for her life. This fall, she will be heading off to medical school, well on her way to becoming a doctor. But first, she and her besties head to Ireland to celebrate.

Nowhere did her future plans even include serious dating, let alone becoming mated to a man who can turn into a freaking beast with wings. Nor did she reckon with being sucked through a portal onto another planet while on her way home from a great night out.

Yet from the very first time her new mate touches her, Anna wonders if this could be the real deal – as in: the big L. The only problem is, her mate says his kind do not love; they protect, they pleasure, and they provide. Can Anna really kiss goodbye to all her plans for the future, and agree to spend the rest of her existence without love?

Publisher’s Note: This steamy paranormal romance, while the third in the Alcyran Chronicles series, can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

D’Vorak launched himself off the rooftop, took to the air, and sniffed the wind. He soared like a ghostly specter, blending in with the night. On the streets below, the people never glanced up as he glided above. Perhaps that was why they didn’t know their world was dying. They were too involved with what was right in front of them to view the larger picture.

Working with Rhiannon was risky. He understood the perils of trusting the Clovis wench. However, she had promised that if he succeeded in this task, she would sever his people’s ties with the Clovis. That must happen before the truth of the GÅ«la was discovered—the truth they had kept hidden, the weapons they had forged.

All he had to do was find the three women and take them to his planet. Three particular women whom Rhiannon indicated were descended from the original line of Clovis. Earth had been the home world for the Clovis before they discovered the wormhole to Destruna, another realm, another world where they weren’t persecuted and fled this one. The ancient lore of the GÅ«la described the first arrival of the Clovis on Destruna. At that time, the tribes had been primitive, living in thatch huts. It was the Clovis who taught them to build, to write, to read.

It was during that time, the true wealth of the Gūla was discovered. Warlords seized the mines filled with lunar crystals. When put together, they glowed, and were a power source unlike anything else on Destruna.

And from that power source they had created weapons capable of bringing down a Dráo, and protecting their realm. But the weapons created were too potent if they fell into the wrong hands. He shuddered at the thought of the Clovis with them. Queen Mona was already a power hungry wench with immense resources; she didn’t need more at her disposal.

His nose caught a whiff of sweetness on the breeze. The potency and flavor reminded him of dragonsbane wine. Being surrounded by the foreign stench, his beast wanted to roll around in the familiar scent.

A Virtual Book Tour: April in the Back of Beyond by p.m.terrell #RomanticSuspense #Giveaway @GoddessFish

April in the Back of Beyond

by p.m.terrell

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Writer Hayley Hunter has arrived in Ireland to complete a book on Irish history. When she discovers the old carriage house she is renting is haunted, she is determined to uncover the truth behind the burned ruins of a nearby manor house and the abandoned British barracks it overlooks. With the assistance of Shay Macgregor, an Irish historian, her quest will take her to 1919 and the Irish War for Independence, exposing the murders of two young men and why their mother, April Crutchley, refuses to leave the back of beyond even in death. With a budding romance and the opportunity to begin life anew, Hayley finds her own life is now in jeopardy as she gets closer to a truth the villagers have long sought to bury.
Excerpt Three:
I could not hear the cattle though we continued to approach. I saw a head dodge this way or that, could envision their mouths opening in snorts or grunts. Two dogs came into the picture as though there were curtains on either side, appearing from behind the veils to join the cattle on center stage. They ducked and darted, their heads held low, ever on the watch for a strayed cow and yet the yips and barks I should have heard were lost in the winds that blew through here a hundred years ago.
The road stopped and yet Shay continued to press forward, the terrain becoming steeper and rockier as we drew ever closer. I was panting now and my forehead was covered in perspiration and yet I knew I could not turn back. I had to remain with Shay. I longed to ask why we were moving steadily toward the ruins, or what he hoped we could possibly accomplish there, but the words were frozen on my lips.
The air grew icy but there was no wind, as if time itself was suspended.
Then the herd parted to reveal two young men, boys really; and they were looking at us.
Shay stopped and I was so mesmerized that I started past him but he reached out to grab my arm. I have no idea what amount of force he might have used because in that instant, I barely registered his hand upon me. I only knew my feet had stopped and I was staring uphill at two boys that stared back at me.
Their baggy pants were dark, their shirts light, but I could see the giant tree that stood behind them. My brain slowly registered that I could see it because I was looking through them; the combination of their light and dark clothing was casting the tree into curious shadows. I knew they were looking at us though I could not see their facial features, but rather judged their stance from the position of their bodies. Their faces glowed eerily, the outlines blurry. They grew even hazier as I realized they were beginning to run.
In an instant the cattle dispersed in a panic, rushing down the hill toward the pasture from whence they’d come while the two boys raced upward in the opposite direction toward the house. They reached the open doorway almost at the same time, catapulting over the threshold. As they stepped inside the walls, everything vanished: the boys, the dogs and the cattle were gone. All that was left were the skeletal ruins, dark and forbidding against a sky filled with ominous clouds.
Author Interview
How did you choose the genre you write in?
I love books that take ordinary people and place them into extraordinary situations. I also love the dynamics of mysteries and suspense; the way the pieces are carefully arranged in the beginning, the mounting drama, and the method used in weaving everything together into the final scenes. Because those are the books I enjoy reading, I’ve found they are also the ones I enjoy writing the most. Even my historical books have been written with the same rules as suspense, which has helped to make them decent sellers.
Where do you get your ideas?
I perform a great deal of research and I often come across stories, backdrops and events that influence my writing. When I began studying my family’s history in Ireland, it opened up an entirely new world for me. I love writing about Ireland; the Irish have had such an eventful and colorful history, and the island itself is so magical and mystical. Every time I travel there, I come back with enough ideas to last a decade, and those that are meant to be written will stick in my mind.
Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote was the book that first influenced me to write mysteries and suspense. I considered writing nonfiction but love the creativity of fiction too much, so while it influenced my style I’ve remained with fiction. Also, What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson taught me the importance of a cliff-hanger at the end of each chapter. It keeps the reader turning the pages, especially as they are soaring toward the climactic scene. I love anything by Daphne du Maurier but my editors picked up on changes in my manuscripts that made them too ‘flowery’; it seems today’s audiences want less description and more action.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
I used three real life stories as inspiration. Hayley Hunter, the writer that travels to Ireland to research an historical work, is loosely based on my own experiences traveling back and forth to Ireland to research both my historical books and my fiction. The country is so rich in history and fascinating stories.
During my research, I discovered a true story about two brothers who were murdered in 1919, during the Irish fight for independence from Britain. The story haunted me; not only because of the brothers but because their mother was there when it happened and it affected her for the rest of her life. She became April Crutchley in the story, and the ruins overlooking the old British barracks are based on the true story.
Because the story deals with ghosts that haunt the writer’s rented cottage and the surrounding area, I integrated a third true story about parallel worlds and time warping.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
My favorite chapter was the one leading up to the climactic scene, where the final pieces of the puzzle fall into place. It is then that Hayley learns the full story of the brothers’ murders, their mother’s role in trying to save them, and what happened afterward. It is also an omen of what is to come, as the past catches up with the present.
How did you come up with the title?
The title, April in the Back of Beyond, is a play on words. When the story begins, writer Hayley Hunter is arriving in Ireland in early April, before the beginning of the rushed tourist season. But as the story progresses, the reader learns of April Crutchley, the mother who cannot leave her home even after death. The ‘back of beyond’ is a phrase used in Ireland to describe a place far from everything; in this case, it is in a remote area of western Ireland where April once lived and where her boys died.
When superheroes fall in love, anything can happen.
Daniel Hecht doesn’t belong in this century. Catapulted into the present from 1943, he’s out of place and out of touch. Still, he was the American war hero called “Lionheart” and his heroism has followed him into the modern world. He now leads an underground group of superpowered misfits, but the misfit he keeps turning to is Nina Asher.
Nina has a vast knowledge of history, yet no idea who she is or where she’s from. She has become the target of dangerous creatures that have appeared all over the world. As she and Daniel work to decipher an ancient, cryptic myth, they experience flashbacks to things that never could have happened. They are falling in love, but there’s something they’re sure they need to remember, and it’s keeping them apart.
The key to saving the world may begin with the act of remembering.
Daniel
He stood at the bottom of the stairs and noticed a small sofa blocking the path to his apartment. He put his hands on his hips, let his shoulders slump, and his head dropped toward his chest as he shook it. Straightening and backing up from the first step, he ran toward the sofa and jumped. His left leg twisted between cushions, sinking into the deep crease where the seat and back met. Pressing his palms flat on the floor to balance his weight, he tried to dislodge himself, but ended up taking an awkward lunge. Letting out a deep sigh, he surveyed the mess he had made
“Sorry about that,” said a voice.
Daniel twisted in the direction of the voice. A young woman stood at the threshold of the building’s only first-floor apartment. From this angle, he couldn’t see her face right away. She was wearing light purple sneakers and torn-up jeans that hugged the bottom half of her hips. Her darker purple t-shirt, damp down the center, skimmed her narrow waist, emphasizing the roundness of her breasts.
She said something else, but his brain had gone momentarily numb. He looked up and stared at what seemed like Helen of Troy, come to life. She was stunning. Her eyes were large, with long eyelashes. Her nose was small and straight, and her mouth was full, evenly proportioned, and dark pink. Her black hair was pulled back in a long ponytail. The remote, artistic part of Daniel’s brain, which he’d thought long-buried, lit up. His long-abandoned sketchbook sprung to mind momentarily. He refocused.
About the Author:
Karen Janowsky has been fascinated by ancient mythology since childhood. She has loved superheroes since the first time she saw the Super Friends on television in 1970’s. Because flying an invisible jet was never a viable career option, and because running around in a cape, swimsuit, and bright red boots is not socially acceptable for adults, she teaches yoga and writing at the College of Southern Maryland. Her stories and poems have been featured in several anthologies and literary magazines since 1991. She received her master’s degree in English from Florida State University.
