The Candidate: A Novel of Suspense

I read and enjoyed Paul Harris' first novel THE SECRET KEEPER, so I was excited to get a copy of his new release, THE CANDIDATE. This gripping political thriller is especially relevant as it comes on the eve of our Presidential election.

The story begins with a bang—literally, as an attempt is made on a candidate's life. Exciting and authentic—the timeliness of the subject matter makes the book especially intriguing.

I'm all about the characters and Harris gives his real substance. Jack Hodges, the candidate, Dee Babineaux, the campaign manager, Mike Sweeney, the aide who is recruited to find out who the shooter really is—they're all well developed and believable.

The author's knowledge about politics and people elevates The Candidate above other mysteries. The plot entertains, while it makes us think. Even if you are not a fan of politics, this is a story that will keep you turning the pages. Highly recommended.

Book Description

IT begins with a single gunshot.

On a frozen winter’s night deep in rural Iowa a female assassin tries to kill no-hoper presidential candidate Senator Jack Hodges. The woman fails but her attempt at murder transforms the race for the White House. Suddenly the former war hero-turned-politician is big news. Guided by his outspoken and outrageous campaign manager, Dee Babineaux, Hodges’ promise of radical change electrifies American politics.

But the identity of Hodges’ would-be killer remains unknown. Her name, age, even her nationality, are a complete mystery. As the campaign takes off, it becomes vital to discover who she is. The task is assigned to young staffer Mike Sweeney, a true believer in Hodges’ cause. He must find out the woman’s deepest secrets before anyone from a rival campaign or the media does. Sweeney’s journey will take him from the depths of the American heartland to the corridors of power in Washington and, finally, into some of American history’s darkest and bloodiest corners. And, all the time, Hodges’ campaign is inching ever closer to making its candidate the next President of the United States.
The Candidate is a thrilling ride right into the heart of a modern American campaign. Along the way it poses some of the most fundamental questions of politics, but also of the human heart. How far will you go to win? Can anyone really leave their past behind?

His experiences covering the civil war in Sierra Leone formed the inspiration for his first novel, THE SECRET KEEPER. He is glad to have swapped writing about war zones for the equally exotic but slightly less life-threatening world of American politics.

Excerpt:

Within the Crumbling Walls
By Lucy Felthouse

Exiting the Colosseo Metro station, Libby shot a grin at her boyfriend, Ciaran. “I don’t think we’ll have any trouble finding it, do you?”

“Hmm?” Ciaran frowned, then turned his gaze in the direction that Libby was pointing. He gave a sheepish smile. “No, I don’t think we will. Shall we put the map away?”

Libby nodded, and Ciaran spun round so she should take the map and load it into his backpack. Zipping it back up, she patted it twice to signal she was done. Ciaran turned and held out his hand. She took it, and together they took their lives in their hands crossing the busy Roman road and walked to the Colosseum.

Despite the early hour, the queue was already considerable, and the couple exchanged a wry look. But then Libby remembered something. “Hey, don’t look so glum babe. We can skip the queue, remember?”

Ciaran frowned. “We can?”

Pulling a small credit card shaped and sized item from her pocket, she replied, “Yes! Our Roma cards mean we can get in quicker. That was one of the selling points the rep kept going on about when she was trying to flog them to us.”

Ciaran slapped his forehead theatrically, then retrieved his own card from his pocket. “Of course!” He used his not inconsiderable height to peer over the heads of the group in front of him. “Okay, I see it. There’s a separate line for Roma Pass holders, and it’s moving tons quicker. Hurrah!”

He made his way through the crowd, using a combination of touches on people’s backs and the words “excuse me.” Libby followed quickly in his wake. Soon they were at the back of the very short and swiftly-moving queue. People passed through, showing their cards to a very stern-looking Italian man, who nodded and pointed them towards another line.

This time they scanned their cards through some kind of barcode reader, and finally, they were in. Within the crumbling walls of the ancient Colosseum, probably the most famous landmark in Rome. Looking around, Libby could see why.

Photos and videos didn’t do it justice. She wasn’t sure if Colosseum translated to colossal or not, but it was certainly the most apt word to describe the place. It really was huge—and they hadn’t even seen the best part yet. Following Ciaran from the ticket booth area—which was literally within the great walls—they passed out into the open area in the middle. Libby gasped.

It was amazing.

They were at ground level, with two or three levels above—she wasn’t sure which—and of course, the one below. Where the gladiators, warriors and fierce creatures would have been kept before being forced to fight in the arena.

Realising Ciaran was gaping at the sight before them too, she encouraged him forward. “Come on, we’re kind of in the way here.” Looking left, she saw an area which was fenced off and held warning signs urging the public not to enter. Libby snorted. The whole place was falling to pieces, how could they possibly deem one section more dangerous than another?

Shaking her head, she turned her attention to the right and saw an area which would allow them a better view of the arena floor. She grabbed Ciaran’s hand and pulled him with her.

Leaning on a barrier and looking out, Libby saw that arena “floor” was not an accurate description. At one end of the enormous structure, a wooden base had been erected, but the rest of the oval was open, displaying what lay beneath. It looked like a labyrinth, and suddenly she became aware of an English-speaking tour guide telling his group the history of the place. She eavesdropped for a while, then fell to thinking how lucky she was to have been born in this day and age. She’d never know anyone who’d be thrown to their deaths in such a place—or be forced to watch them killed in such a brutal manner.

Enjoy the excerpt below, but first let's find out more about Joshua K. Johnson...

Hi Josh. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm in my late 20s, married with an 18-month old son. I've been writing since about the age of 13.

What do you do when you are not writing?

Taking care of my son, or generally spending time with my family. I work nights as well.

Do you have a day job as well?

Not exactly a “day” job; I work the midnight sort at UPS as a Part-Time/Frontline Supervisor (they're constantly changing our title lol)

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

I first started writing at about age 13; I finished my first book shortly after. It was terrible; a collection of barely-veiled plagarisms from games, comics and books.

How did you choose the genre you write in?

Sci-fi and fantasy are just the two genres that really appeal to me.

Where do you get your ideas?

Most of them just wander through my head and I try to grab them before they wander out the other side.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

I've experienced writer's block many times, but when I get stuck on one project I always have others that I can turn to.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I work with a pretty detailed outline, but I always leave room for on-the-fly adjustments.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

George RR Martin and David Weber have been a major influence on my writing their respective genres (Fantasy and Space-Opera Sci-Fi)

How did you come up with the title?

The title for The Cerberus Rebellion was actually a labor. I had several ideas as I was writing (the original title was just Revolution). I had an idea of how I wanted the titles for the series to work: I wanted to highlight the major house that was the primary player in the novel and then tell something about what was happening in the novel. House Jarmann (the primary players in TRC) have a 3 headed Hellhound as their sigil, so I went through iterations of using Hellhound and finally settled on Cerberus.

What project are you working on now?

I'm working on The Hydra Offensive, the sequel to Cerberus and book 2 in this series of Griffins & Gunpowder novels.

Thanks so much for coming by.

BLURB:

One hundred years of peace and prosperity. War changes everything.

On the world of Zaria, Elves, magic and mythical beasts coexist beside rifles and railroads. The futures of two nations hang in the balance as rebels and revolutionaries trade gunfire with loyalists and tyrants.

Eadric Garrard was raised to believe that as the rightful King of Ansgar, his loyal nobles and fearful subjects answered to his every whim, no matter the cost or consequence. His decision to send his troops thousands of miles away will test that fear, and loyalty.

Raedan Clyve was ordinary until an Elven ritual involving a griffin’s heart turned him into something more. Twenty years later, he still struggles with the magics that rage through his body. His mentor holds him back from his full potential and he faces pressure to find a suitable wife and father an heir.

Hadrian Clyve has picked up where his father left off and works to expand his family’s influence amongst the Ansgari nobility. His aggressive negotiation of alliances and shrewd choice of marriage agreements has earned him respect, and resentment. When his King calls his troops to arms, Hadrian has other things in mind.

After a century of scheming and decades of preparation, Magnus Jarmann is ready to bring his family’s plans to fruition by launching a war of independence that will free his people and return his country to its rightful place among the nations of Zaria. The King’s call to arms creates an opportunity that Magnus cannot afford to miss.

In a war, little is held back; in a revolution, nothing is safe.

EXCERPT:

The crackle of musket fire drifted up from the trenches; only a few quick shots at first, but quickly followed by full volleys. Flashes of light marked the battle in the trenches and Raedan listened carefully for the command to push his troops forward. He glanced behind him quickly.

The color guard stood resolute, the banners of Arndell and the North Griffin Cliffs at the front of the formation. A half-company of infantry had been assigned to protect the flags should they come under attack.

Wounded began to drift back out of the trenches. Some retreated under their own power; others were carried between two of their fellows. Raedan tried to count the men fleeing the battle, but quickly lost count.

Finally, the trumpets sounded again, ordering him forward.

“How's it look in there?” he asked a retreating officer. The man wore the gaudy orange of Sea Watch and the stripes of a captain. He had taken a round through his shoulder and was supporting a corporal that had taken a shot to the leg.

“The artillery did a job on them,” the captain said. “But they've still got some fight left.”

“All right, men! Let's take it to them!” Raedan started toward the trenches at the double time and his men started to trot after him.

The earthworks twisted and zagged one way and another, slowly leading the infantry closer to the fortress that loomed large above. The sun had finally set and flares were exploding high overhead.

Battered from the double whammy of her husband’s death and caring for her aging parents, Sarah Creston thrills to Jen and Brett’s exquisite care and ravishing sex. Now that she’s had her first taste of a woman, will she be satisfied – or will she want more?  Everything hinges on what Sarah wants.

AVAILABLE FROM

REVIEW Read what author and reviewer Destiny Blaine had to say at Romance Reviews by Authors:

With a gift for writing remarkable dialogue, Adriana Kraft used her characters to show how swingers are able to manage the lifestyle, hold a marriage together, and pursue other relationship interests while remaining true to their lifelong commitments. The scenes between multiple lovers weren’t forced or unnatural. In fact they were beautifully relayed in a fashion which draws the reader into the heart of these characters' most intimate moments.

EXCERPT

“I don’t want you hurt, Jen.” Brett crossed his legs and uncrossed them. “Hell, I don’t like seeing our friends hurt, either.”

“I know. I know. But you’ll support me.”

“Of course, I will. But Sarah is her own person in all of this. She may not fit into our lives at all over time. We might just be a stepping stone on her journey.”

Jen tensed, certain Brett could see the blood draining from her cheeks.

“She may become too possessive.” Brett twisted his mouth in thought. “Or maybe she’ll be more like us than you realize.”

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe she’ll be as intrigued and fulfilled with swinging as we are.”

“Do you really think she’ll swing on her own?”

“She found us, didn’t she?”

“Yes, but...”

“Maybe she’ll swing with us. Maybe she’ll swing on her own. Maybe this taste of swinging with us will satisfy her curiosity by the end of summer and she’ll be ready to go find a guy and live happily ever after.”

“But you don’t believe that?”

“Who knows? Given how I saw her respond to her first taste of a woman, it’s hard to imagine she’ll give up women completely.

Jen wet her lips. “She was wonderful. I’m just so pleased I was her first.”

“I know you are. All I’m saying is I’ll be surprised if you’re Sarah’s only woman.”

Jen crossed her arms under her breasts. “I know that.” Her voice cracked. “No matter what you think or Donna or Ryan...” Jen felt her pulse quicken. “I’m not wanting to keep Sarah for myself. But she needs time.”

“Okay.” Brett exhaled softly. “Time is what you have. But I’m not sure Sarah’s timetable and Donna and Ryan’s timetable are going to necessarily match yours.”

Harry Blue: I might be ‘mature’ but I like what I’ve got

I'd like to extend a big welcome to my guest blogger today, Harry Blue, author of Hot Vegas.

I might be ‘mature’ but I like what I’ve got

Strange, really, but the older you get, the less you are expected to have sexual fantasies. It’s just like imagining your parents having sex, yuk, how could they? But when you read about sex, written by any age, then somehow that’s okay. Kindles and other electronic reading devices have somehow made it all the more easy to read any kind of literature without anyone wondering what you are reading.

I have always loved sex, hope that I always will do, which is why I have found it easy to write my first erotic novel, Hot Vegas, which is about Jeff and his partner Prudence, who win a large sum on the UK lottery. I didn’t want them to win the absolute mega millions, because it would somehow lessen the story, which is romance, suspense, villains, FBI, Mafia, and sex in all types and kinds of locations.

They stay at the world-famous Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, with five star treatment. It’s luxury all the way for their holiday of a lifetime, and after they have checked into their penthouse apartment, she surprises him by revealing that she has travelled all the way from the UK combat style – and it’s made her wringing wet. As the sun sets over the Strip, Prudence shows her man precisely what he has to anticipate during their stay. Sex, sex, and more sex.

Inevitably they have sex standing up in the shower, with the water cascading over their bodies as she takes him in her willing mouth. When she has swallowed every last drop of him, Jeff then takes the shower mitt, soaps it in fragrant oils, then washes her thoroughly, including her G spot, which he seems to find very well. Practice makes perfect.

Our two lovers have sex in a variety of places, far too many for me tell you here. Jeff has always followed an Australian rock band, who are appearing here in Vegas for the first time in years. The concierge manages to book an exclusive box, where as the band rock on, Prudence removes Jeff’s prick from his trousers, taking his fully erect prick as far as she can, while the band watch what they are doing. The drummer can’t help his stiffy, as he is mesmerised by what Prudence is doing. All too soon Jeff comes.

He is confused by the Mafia for a drug running member of the band, the FBI are watching over them, but are powerless to assist when Jeff is kidnapped at the Hoover Dam. When all this activity is over, it’s time for Jeff and Prudence to enter the biggest blackjack game ever played off the famous Strip. Do they win the big prize? You’ll have to buy Hot Vegas by Harry Blue to find out.

The next ‘Hot’ book is Hot Hits. This involves a blue eyed blonde 28 year old who happens to be a contract killer. Whose side is she on? Her own of course. Our hero Roger lives at his parent’s small seaside hotel, and walks into a guest’s bedroom without knocking because he assumes that she is already out. Who is she? A cougar in her mid 40s. Where did she appear from? The bathroom. And all she is wearing is a towel, which is soon discarded so she can immediately appreciate Roger’s athletic body. And boy does she enjoy his body. During the book he meets Sue, who plays the trumpet in a silver band. That means she knows how to use her very willing lips. There’s Club Sadist, where people are tortured live on stage, and that’s where Roger ends up, in chains, hoping to be rescued. But by whom? And for what purpose.

The next ‘Hot’ book is still being written. That’s called Hot MILF.

*****

‘Soft Lips’ Prudence checks her lottery ticket in bed, and the noise she makes takes Jeff ‘Sex Machine’s attention away from the soccer results. Fulham have drawn again. They celebrate by making love, and then it’s off to Las Vegas first class for the holiday of a lifetime. Luxury all the way. But Jeff is mistaken for an Australian mobster, as they make love in a hotel lift, and a private box in a theatre, and their own intimate pool, and….Pop stars, the Mafia, and the FBI are all involved as we tour the gambling capital of the world, culminating in the biggest black jack gambling tournament to be held off the famous Strip.

Hot Vegas is available from Amazon UK, Amazon US, All Romance eBooks, Barnes & Noble and all other good eBook retailers.

*****

I write under the name Harry Blue, because that’s what I write – Blue.

It’s all romantic, full blown, one on one sex, with a good story to go with the erotica. A hero, a heroine, danger, suspense, everything’s in my books, all starting with the word Hot.

The reality is that I am a happily married man in my mid 60s, one daughter, three grand daughters, living on the south coast, dealing in antiques and a sight-seeing guide when I am not writing erotic novels.

I have been writing for thirty years, mainly comedy, so you can find out a lot more about me on www.harrythewriter.com

Available at Bookstrand:

Story Excerpt

Jack picked up his bottle and held it to his mouth. Empty. Damn. Carefully avoiding the dancers, he made his way to the bar for another Corona. The music was loud, and Jack felt a headache coming on. At the bar, all the stools were occupied and Jack stood unnoticed behind two men that he recognized. They had taken a sunset cruise earlier in the week, and the sandy-haired man had flirted with Jack shamelessly. Nothing had come of it—then. Maybe tonight they could take things to the next level.

Jack was about to squeeze between them and make contact when the flirt turned to his buddy and laughed. “I’d do the Captain for sure. He looks great for his age.” The darker man smacked his lips. “Think we could get that daddy interested in a threesome?”

Daddy? Jack froze, horrified. He was nobody’s daddy and especially not to two men who were well into their thirties. Jack was turning forty-five for Christ’s sake, not senior citizen status, not by a long shot. He’d been told many times that he was hot. Yeah, but a lot of those times the compliment had been qualified with the words for his age. Those three words changed everything. He died inside every time he heard them.

His drink forgotten, Jack took a deep breath, ran his fingers through his hair, and walked toward the bathroom. He needed a few minutes alone. Jack stood at the sink and looked intently at his image in the mirror. When had he become a middle-aged cat? Did he really look forty-five? The years had passed so quickly. It seemed like only yesterday that he and the others had come here from New England, where their families had lived for years. They were young men on vacation who had fallen in love with Key West and stayed. When the opportunity arose to buy an abandoned cigar factory, they took it and turned the property into the popular all-male resort—TomCats. That time seemed so long ago, but it was only ten years. The other cat-shifters had been in their twenties. Although Jack had been the oldest, at thirty-five, Tom Kay had handled most of the transactions and became the unofficial CEO of TomCats, Inc. That was fine with Jack. He didn’t care about business. His love for the sea took precedence over everything else. TomCats charters was his baby, but he didn’t get too involved in the financial end. He was all about sailing and taking care of the sloop.

It was a good life, so why was he so fucking down? The face staring back at him didn’t look all that different. No wrinkles creased his angular features. His ocean-blue eyes were still sharp. So his black hair had a few streaks of gray, so what?

Fuck it. He knew he was still attractive. It was just that he was always surrounded by beautiful men, and being the oldest of the group they felt they had to tease and remind him of it all the time. He knew he was hot. He heard it enough. Daddy? Really? Give me a break.

Release Blitz: Perfect Mate by Mina Carter

Perfect Mate by Mina Carter

Monsters do exist...and they’re the good guys.

Lillian Rosewood leads an ordinary, boring life working as the manager of a psychiatric hospital. The highlights of her day, other than her skinny hot chocolate, are the hunky guards who work in the secure section. Until a late night emergency is wheeled in.

Captain Jack Harper is insane, drop-dead gorgeous...and just had his abdomen shredded. Despite the fact they're not an emergency room, Lillian can't turn him away and risk a death on her hands. Unable to get the handsome soldier out of her mind, Lillian sneaks into the restricted area to check on him. What she finds is beyond belief. Somehow Jack has managed to heal himself from a near fatal wound in mere hours.

When one of the doctors, Walker, attempts to rape her, things go from bad to worse. In the blink of an eye, Jack is loose and Walker is dead... and Lillian must accept a truth about her rescuer that will change her world forever. What if the patients aren't insane? What if their stories of secret government experiments and monsters are true?

Warning: Contains blood, mayhem and nude werewolves operating heavy weaponry. Large amounts of sarcasm, and smart-ass vampires may offend some readers. No civilian hospital staff were harmed in the making of this story.

She couldn’t believe she was crying. Lillian didn’t cry. Ever. She was tougher than that. Tougher than the stereotypical little woman who fell apart at the first sign of danger… Or the mother who couldn’t cope after the death of her husband and hightailed it to her lover with teary demands to “make the nightmare go away”. And conveniently forgot the fact she’d left her baby daughter behind.

She was not that woman, nor anything like her.

Once in the corridor, away from the stench of death and the sight of all that black, wrong blood, she stepped away from Jack and swiped at her tears with the back of her hand. Despite the fact he’d just killed a man, there was something about him that made her feel safe. Safe with a murderer. Okay, now she knew she was losing it. Perhaps insanity ran in her family and they’d just never told her?

“I’m sorry. I’m not normally like this,” she apologized as she looked up and offered a small, teary smile. Her mouth already open to explain, she stopped.
He was gorgeous.

She’d known that. When they’d brought him in, her mind had told her that he was sex on a stick. But he’d been injured, a patient. Even though she was the hospital manager, she was bound by the patient-doctor thing, surely? The one that said “thou shalt not lust after the patients”.

Now though, without all the blood and the ragged uniform—even in the hospital gown that did nothing for anyone—he was so good-looking it took her breath away. She shook her head slightly, waiting for the hidden cameras and some cheesy reality show host to burst out of the supply cabinet in the corridor next to them. He couldn’t be for real. Soldiers just didn’t look that good.

With warm amber eyes set above sharp cheekbones, his face was bisected by a strong, straight nose over sensually full lips. A severe buzz-cut merely highlighted his attractiveness, concentrating all attention on his face. He should be strutting his stuff on a catwalk, not getting down and dirty playing soldier.

Her eyes travelled downward, and the rest of him more than fulfilled the promise of his face. He was toned…hell no, he was ripped. Even his muscles had muscles. Tall and broad shouldered, he was built like a quarterback, and his life had obviously been one of violence. Old scars dotted his skin like a mad artist had gone to town with his body as the canvas.

“I know you’re not. You’re strong.”

His words drew her attention back to his face. His eyes were blue again. He smiled, which almost robbed her of reason, but she held onto the thought for grim death. No one’s eyes changed that fast. What the hell have they done to him?

“Your eyes… What the hell are you?”

The smile turned cold, his features freezing around it and locking it into place. In hindsight, perhaps a demand for information wasn’t the best way to deal with this, especially after what had gone on in the room behind them. Walker was slumped, dead, but somehow she knew Jack wouldn’t hurt her.

He moved toward her. Only three steps, but with those blue eyes intent upon her, it seemed more like a stalk. With every movement he made, her instincts screamed “predator”.

She held her ground, tilting her head to look at him as he neared. He stopped inches away from her, so close the heat of his body beat at her skin even through her clothing and his gown.

“We don’t have time for this, Lilly.”

He lifted a hand to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. As though he couldn’t stop touching her, he stroked a gentle finger down her cheekbone to the corner of her lips. It took everything she had not to turn her head and press into the small caress, but she held true to her purpose, her eyes on his.
“Make time.”

His lips quirked, and everything female in her went into meltdown. He had to know the effect he had on women, so she ignored the reaction and met him look for look.

“Stubborn little minx.”

She choked. “What did you call me?”

“Minx,” he repeated, lowering his head and brushing his lips over hers to silence her. As a tactic, it worked. The first touch of his lips, warm and firm over hers, was like setting light to kindling. Heat flared and caught, racing through her body like wildfire.

She moaned, unable to stop her lips parting automatically in invitation. No matter what her mind was screaming about the dead guy in the next room and the possibility the hunk stood in front of her wasn’t just human, her body knew what it wanted, and what it intended to get.

He didn’t pass up the invitation. Groaning, he moved closer and deepened the kiss. With a ruthless sweep of his tongue, he parted her lips farther and slid into the softer recesses of her mouth. She shivered, hot and cold chills chasing over her skin as he kissed her in the darkness of the corridor.

She’d been kissed before and, as she’d thought anyway, she’d been kissed well. This was something else entirely. He kissed her as if there was nothing else in the world. As if she was his sun, his moon and stars…his everything. He didn’t kiss her, he made love to her with his lips and tongue.

Abruptly he broke away, tearing his mouth from hers. With a groan of frustration, he leaned forward to rest his forehead against hers.

“I don’t want to let you go.” The tone in his voice pulled on her heartstrings.

“When they brought me in, there was just pain and blood…so much blood. Darkness was coming for me, and I was ready. But an angel called my name… I had to come back to see if she was as beautiful as she sounded.”

His words reached deep inside her. She already thought he was gorgeous, but to have him spouting words that…romantic wasn’t the word. The claim he’d come back just to see her, that hit her deep down and resonated in her soul.
“And…?”

She almost dared not ask the question, and when she did, her voice emerged breathy and hopeful. Like a teen finally meeting and speaking to her film idol in the flesh.

“Oh yes, she was worth it.”
