The Human Centipede

What do you do when you’re snowed in? I watch movies. We’ve had a lot of snow, 17 inches yesterday, and I’ve watch a lot of movies but none of them have stuck in my mind like The Human Centipede.

I’m a horror fan who’s watched some deranged movies – the entire series of Saw, Hellraiser and Hostel are among my favorites. So when I came across this blurb on Amazon it caught my interest.

Equal parts Cronenbergian body horror, perverse fetish film, and E.C. Comics-style gross-out, The Human Centipede is Dutch director Tom Six's uniquely macabre endurance test for fans of modern fright fare.

Human Centipede seems to be on its way to becoming one of those oddball cult films - I had to have it. Well, it’s certainly unique. (see the blurb below) but it's also cheesy and boring at times. German actor, Dieter Laser, who plays the mad doctor is the best thing in it. His over-the-top performance kept me interested. As for the boast that it’s 100% medically accurate, I just don’t believe it. My final grade – a D for being different.

I can’t wait till it snows again. Splice is next on my watch list.

Amazon Product Description:

100% Medically accurate.
The compelling simplicity of Saw. The stylish dread of Eraserhead. The black humor of A Nightmare On Elm Street. Those are the benchmarks of horror that the outrageous Dutch film The Human Centipede matches. The plot is diabolically simple: two stranded American tourists are given shelter by a famed German doctor (a maniacally intense Dieter Laser) who made his fortune surgically separating conjoined twins. Now his mad genius is pushing the doctor to do the reverse. He tells the women that they will be surgically attached to a Japanese businessman mouth to buttocks, one after the other and thus will be born a new creature: the human centipede! Compellingly perverse, hilarious, and shockingly straightforward, Dutch director Tom Six s new film is hands-down the most memorable horror film of the year.

P’tit Cadeau by Anel Viz

My to be read pile is enormous but when I saw the cover, by Reese Dante, and read the blurb, I knew I had to read P’tit Cadeau by Anel Viz next. And once I started reading, I couldn’t stop.

It’s an intensely romantic story, which I love, and the characters are so complex and emotional. The setting is well described and becomes a character in itself. The blurb is below.

You can read an excerpt at Silver Publishing:

[P’TIT CADEAU (euphemism) – the “small gift” French hustlers ask for to let you know they expect to be paid]

Ben, an American art professor on a painting sabbatical in the south of France, rents a room in an isolated village to avoid the tourist crush. There he meets his landlady's brother, the sensitive and childlike loner Jean-Yves, whom the locals consider simple minded because he is "different". Ben makes him his principal model and undertakes to build his self-confidence and prepare him to fend for himself.

Jean-Yves’ has never had a friend before. As they grow closer, Ben comes to realize the extent of the young man’s emotional needs, and his total dependence and unbridled devotion frighten him. Has he taken on more responsibility than he can handle? Should he allow himself to fall in love with Jean-Yves when he knows their relationship must end when his sabbatical is over?

* The Virtual Life of Fizzy Oceans * a new release by David A. Ross

JUST PUBLISHED

Today is release day for The Virtual Life of Fizzy Oceans by David A. Ross. Congratulations David! This one caught my interest immediately. I have a copy on my Kindle waiting to be read and I will be posting a review in the coming weeks. Here's a blurb to whet your appetite.

****

Meet Fizzy Oceans—archivist, researcher, environmentalist and adventurer. On her travels she witnesses The Exodus, the Battle of Gettysburg and Hurricane Katrina, as well as many other historical and real time events. She meets notable individuals including Gandhi, Mark Twain, Jacques Cousteau, The Dalai Lama, Saddam Hussein and even a new species called the Quinngen.

Such unique experiences and encounters spanning the world and time as we know them would not be possible for a single individual—especially not for a woman named Amy Birkenstock who works as a medical clerk in Seattle, Washington—but Fizzy Oceans, Amy’s digital alter ego, is not in Physical Life. She lives, works and travels in the virtual world where the dead are very much alive, places like ancient Babylon and Pompeii have been reconstructed, and with the click of a button—WHOOSH!—one is transported throughout the Ages to events and destinations that make up our human history.

Even as Amy’s physical life existence is challenged by encroaching environmental disaster, economic instability, and societal breakdown, Fizzy’s virtual world offers instant realization of vision and inspiration. The Virtual Life of Fizzy Oceans imagines the bridging of two worlds—the literal and the metaphorical—and questions what it is we have created, what has been lost, and what might be possible for us as individuals and for the Human Race.

Victoria Blisse talks about * Writing places *

I want to thank my guest today, Victoria Blisse, who will be sharing how she picked the setting for her new story - Sweet Surrender.

Some books could take place anywhere in the world. Okay so they might be set in the town or the country but past that you don’t feel the location really matters. I sometimes write like that but my latest release, Sweet Surrender is not like that at all.

In fact the location of the story is probably the first thing I decided on when I started to write. Scarborough is a large town on the east coast of Britain which is a famous tourist destination. I have been visiting Scarborough since I was little. I was four the first year we first went and I’ve been every year for a holiday since bar one where we spent the holiday in Wales talking about what we’d be doing if we were in Scarborough! So, I’m not going to let on how old I am but I’ve been holidaying there for over 2 decades now.

Now, you’re probably wondering where I got the idea for an erotic story from based on my family holiday destination. Well, I’ve taken several holidays in Scarborough with my husband and only my husband. One year we ended up exploring areas that I’d never been to before and we found this little area of parkland filled with trees and wild lawns and flower beds. It was just off one of the main roads but it was really quiet and secluded and romantic and…well, if you read sweet surrender you will be able to work out where that story is leading too!

So Location was very important to me when writing this particular story and I hope I managed to capture the magic of my favourite place in the whole wide world. So here’s a question for you, is location important to you when you’re reading a story or do other things like plot and character matter much more? I’d love to hear your views.

If you want to read more about my beloved Scarborough and enjoy a voyeuristic romp through one woman’s submissive character you should give Sweet Surrender a try!

Blurb:
She doesn’t know what she wants but he does.

How do you mend a broken heart?

Helen goes on holiday to Scarborough and meets Tom. He is an attractive local artist who takes Helen on a tour of the sweet seaside town. Tom becomes more than just her guide as his dominant nature brings out her own submissive side and a shared joy of exhibitionism.

Thanks for having me Gale, it’s been a pleasure blogging here!
