You Can End Daily Stress With Playfulness & Humor

 

One way to change rote, stressful thought patterns is to use playful exaggeration. It is a simple, repetitive method that will produce immediate and significant results, and we will use it often in this book in different ways and situations.

 

Let’s try it with dirty dishes. You see dirty dishes in the sink. Thoughts enter your mind about how irresponsible the person was in leaving them there. You feel annoyed and irritated. You notice this Self-Created Stress reaction inside yourself, and you interrupt it. You say out loud or think:

 

Oh no! My hands will never recover from this!

This is going to ruin my whole life!

It’s the end of the world as I know it!

 

Smile as you do this. Smiling brings about a strong positive emotion, and strong emotion helps change the brain by wiring a new neural pattern that’s even stronger.

 

Every time we change our thought pattern or interrupt old thought responses, we are changing our brain—teaching it—and allowing a new neural pattern to develop. We are telling the brain, This old pattern of thought is no longer useful or acceptable. The brain always listens. EVERY SINGLE EFFORT IS WORTHWHILE. This cannot be overstated.


Author Interview


What do you do when you are not writing?

My passions include martial arts, swimming, a little big boat sailing, hikes, cooking, friends and family, and self-awareness/stress reduction/intelligence (really!!!).


Do you have a day job as well?

I’ve worked in education for decades, where I taught a cutting-edge self-awareness class for ten years. Loved it all, but will leave education this year to focus on writing and other passions.


When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

I began writing in high school. A high school creative writing teacher said of one of my pieces, “A writer like this comes around once every seventeen years.” I was stunned, and it gave me the confidence to think I could write. One comment by one teacher changed my perspective of myself and my life. Yay teachers!!!


How did you choose the genre you write in?

I’ve written in many genres. Nonfiction environmental, nonfiction stress reduction, nonfiction wildlife, memoir, YA fantasy, thrillers, and one proverbial western. Lol


Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Mainly in the beginning of a book, I might need conversations with Mom, editors, and beta readers to figure out some basic plot points. It helps me get started, and then usually I don’t have any issues getting it done.


Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I know a few basic things, like the ending, and some plot points in-between, but I don’t outline until well into the book, and then I might write down 1 sentence/chapter for the last 5-10 chapters, or not. 😊


How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?

As a self-published author (I’ve had 6 NY agents, and published with traditional publishers), marketing is tough! FB ads, AMS ads, book promotions, Bookbub featured deals all are in the mix. I’m not great at it, those that are sell a lot more books even if their writing isn’t as good. However, with 4 movie deals, book sales should increase!


Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?

I would not go to traditional publishers with any books, unless I was offered millions. They take years to put it out, give you a few months in B&N with no marketing, and if it doesn’t sell great, you’re done. Who wants that plan? By self-publishing I control everything and I get to publish my books and not have some junior editor decide its value. And I get to keep my books out there, vs. having some editor or accountant decide that they should be pulled from the ‘shelves’. Traditional publishers pick more losers financially than they do winners, so it’s better to trust yourself with your writing instead of allowing someone else to determine its value.


Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

I finished the 5th JACK STEEL book, and after a rewrite it will be out in early April. I’m excited—I think it’s one of the best STEEL books. It’s hard to keep that kind of progress going—to make each book as good or better than the one before it, but thus far I think I’ve succeeded!


What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I read reviews and take in criticism, but what you find is that you can’t please everyone, so I aim to please those who enjoy my writing and books. Having readers of all ages say they couldn’t put a book down, and can’t wait to see the next one, or that the Stress Reduction book helped them considerably, that is all the gratification I could hope for.

Geoffrey Saign began reducing stress by practicing mindfulness at the age of fifteen. For fifty years he studied many modalities for mind-body calming and awareness, including Qigong, tai chi, kung fu, meditation, biofeedback, positive psychology, and many others. He co-designed and taught a cutting-edge, research-based self-awareness class to young adults for ten years. In 2020 the author experienced a major breakthrough in mind-brain-body awareness, which led to him Living with intelligence HERE, and the resulting book, Smile More Stress Less.
