The Lady Who Knew Too Much by Alyson Chase ~ A steamy historical romance

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Alyson Chase will be awarding a $40 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

He’s an ex-boxer. She sips tea at philosophical salons. And when these two opposites meet, their lives will never be the same.

Lady Juliana knows someone is trying to kill her father. The problem is getting anyone to believe her. Her father thinks she’s imagining things. Her brother that she’s seeking attention. And the man her brother hired to bring her back home…well, he thinks nothing much of her at all.

Brogan Duffy has clawed his way up from the streets to become the lead investigator on his very first inquiry case. The fact that it is to retrieve a spoiled aristocrat playing at intrigue is of no consequence. Nor is the fact that she beguiles him like no other woman. He has a job to do, and he won’t let anything stand in his way, not even this illogical attraction.

But Juliana might not be imagining the threat. And when it’s her life that’s on the line, Brogan has to decide to what lengths he’ll go to keep her safe. Because in order to resolve this make-or-break case in his career, Brogan might have to hazard more than his heart. And with some gambles, there’s no going back…

The door sprung open just as the cab started to move. Mr. Duffy clambered inside, his face an emotionless mask, and slammed the door behind him.

He settled next to her, facing forward, saying nothing.

Juliana twisted her fingers around her pocket-book. Her skin went clammy, then hot.

“Where to?” the driver called down to them.

She bit her lip, sliding Mr. Duffy a sideways glance. Even if he wasn’t here, she’d be hard-pressed to answer that question. But his answer would be worse than anything she could come up with.

She opened her mouth, but Mr. Duffy cut her off. “Vincent Street. A block north of St. Mary’s.”

The address wasn’t familiar. It definitely wasn’t her family’s usual London lodgings. “Where are we going?”

He grunted.

“How did you find me?”

“I followed you from Mr. Huddleson’s home.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “You don’t have that many friends.”

“I have plenty of friends!” Her face flushed. But most of them were also Snow’s friends.

She glanced at the door opposite.

Mr. Duffy gripped her elbow. “Don’t even think of it.”

“Jump from a moving cab?” She sniffed. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

He arched an eyebrow.

She grumbled. Well, she wouldn’t think of it, not when he held her arm so tightly. “I could always scream,” she said.

“You could,” he agreed. “Why haven’t you?”

She chewed on her lower lip. She didn’t think she’d ever screamed in her life, not a full-throated help-I’m-being-murdered kind of scream. She didn’t know if she could force the sound from her throat, not without feeling foolish. “Would it be effective?”

He snorted. “Definitely not.”

About the Author:Alyson Chase lives in Colorado. A former attorney, she happily ditched those suits and now works in her pajamas writing about men’s briefs instead of legal briefs. When she’s not writing, she’s probably engaged in one of her favorite hobbies: napping, eating, or martial arts. (That last one almost makes up for the first two, right?) She also writes humorous, small-town, contemporary romance novels under the name Allyson Charles, and paranormal romances as A. Caprice.

~Finalist Forward INDIES Self-Help Book of the Year 2020~ (Winner TBA 6/17/2021)

Excerpt:

You Can End Daily Stress With Playfulness & Humor

One way to change rote, stressful thought patterns is to use playful exaggeration. It is a simple, repetitive method that will produce immediate and significant results, and we will use it often in this book in different ways and situations.

Let’s try it with dirty dishes. You see dirty dishes in the sink. Thoughts enter your mind about how irresponsible the person was in leaving them there. You feel annoyed and irritated. You notice this Self-Created Stress reaction inside yourself, and you interrupt it. You say out loud or think:

Oh no! My hands will never recover from this!

This is going to ruin my whole life!

It’s the end of the world as I know it!

Smile as you do this. Smiling brings about a strong positive emotion, and strong emotion helps change the brain by wiring a new neural pattern that’s even stronger.

Every time we change our thought pattern or interrupt old thought responses, we are changing our brain—teaching it—and allowing a new neural pattern to develop. We are telling the brain, This old pattern of thought is no longer useful or acceptable. The brain always listens. EVERY SINGLE EFFORT IS WORTHWHILE. This cannot be overstated.

Author Interview

What do you do when you are not writing?

My passions include martial arts, swimming, a little big boat sailing, hikes, cooking, friends and family, and self-awareness/stress reduction/intelligence (really!!!).

Do you have a day job as well?

I’ve worked in education for decades, where I taught a cutting-edge self-awareness class for ten years. Loved it all, but will leave education this year to focus on writing and other passions.

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

I began writing in high school. A high school creative writing teacher said of one of my pieces, “A writer like this comes around once every seventeen years.” I was stunned, and it gave me the confidence to think I could write. One comment by one teacher changed my perspective of myself and my life. Yay teachers!!!

How did you choose the genre you write in?

I’ve written in many genres. Nonfiction environmental, nonfiction stress reduction, nonfiction wildlife, memoir, YA fantasy, thrillers, and one proverbial western. Lol

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Mainly in the beginning of a book, I might need conversations with Mom, editors, and beta readers to figure out some basic plot points. It helps me get started, and then usually I don’t have any issues getting it done.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I know a few basic things, like the ending, and some plot points in-between, but I don’t outline until well into the book, and then I might write down 1 sentence/chapter for the last 5-10 chapters, or not. 😊

How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?

As a self-published author (I’ve had 6 NY agents, and published with traditional publishers), marketing is tough! FB ads, AMS ads, book promotions, Bookbub featured deals all are in the mix. I’m not great at it, those that are sell a lot more books even if their writing isn’t as good. However, with 4 movie deals, book sales should increase!

Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?

I would not go to traditional publishers with any books, unless I was offered millions. They take years to put it out, give you a few months in B&N with no marketing, and if it doesn’t sell great, you’re done. Who wants that plan? By self-publishing I control everything and I get to publish my books and not have some junior editor decide its value. And I get to keep my books out there, vs. having some editor or accountant decide that they should be pulled from the ‘shelves’. Traditional publishers pick more losers financially than they do winners, so it’s better to trust yourself with your writing instead of allowing someone else to determine its value.

Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

I finished the 5th JACK STEEL book, and after a rewrite it will be out in early April. I’m excited—I think it’s one of the best STEEL books. It’s hard to keep that kind of progress going—to make each book as good or better than the one before it, but thus far I think I’ve succeeded!

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I read reviews and take in criticism, but what you find is that you can’t please everyone, so I aim to please those who enjoy my writing and books. Having readers of all ages say they couldn’t put a book down, and can’t wait to see the next one, or that the Stress Reduction book helped them considerably, that is all the gratification I could hope for.

His phone rang. He slapped at the table, using the vibrations to move the device within reach. When he checked the ID screen, his heart hammered. Bob Casey. The last time he’d heard from his friend and former publicist, he’d set up the initial meeting between Blake and Jude. What does Bob want? “Hi, Bob.”

“Blake, the man of the summer,” Bob said. “How are you? Should be flying high. Have you seen the charts? They’ve picked up Summer Song in the clubs and there’s talk of making a dance move for it. Nuts, right?”

“Nuts.” He needed to investigate the popularity of his song. “I’ve seen some of the charts, but I hadn’t heard anything about the clubs.” He reclined on the couch. “How have you been? Organizing up a storm?”

“Not quite a storm, but I have an idea. I can get you a stadium tour to promote your music if you’re willing to go out with Jude. Does that sound good? Sound like something you’d be interested in doing? I’ve got the whole thing pretty much lined up.”

Blake wobbled back onto his seat. Shock washed over him. Bob can’t be serious. “Because Jude agreed to this venture?” he snapped. “I really doubt he would.” He and Jude hadn’t talked in forever and their split hadn’t been amicable. Jude had vowed to ignore him, even if he was the last man on earth.

“No, but he’ll want to do it,” Bob said. “I know him.”

“Why? What do you know?” History hadn’t been kind to Blake, and there would have to be some serious cash involved to get Jude to sign on.

“I know the song is exploding. It’s everywhere and everyone wants to see you together. You two have chemistry. When you sing that song, people believe you love each other,” Bob said. “I knew from the moment I heard it you were meant for each other.”

At the time, he and Jude had been in love. “Jude won’t do it.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I’m pretty sure he won’t.” The words “I never want to see you again” were damn obvious.

“Will you do a tour? Ten to fifteen dates spread over three months? If I set it up?” Bob asked. “If I can get him to go on tour, will you go?”

“Only if he agrees, but I doubt it.” Blake shook his head. “You’ll have to do some serious magic to get it to work.”

Amanda grabbed Martin’s arm.

“Hang on,” Martin said. He directed Kelly to the conference room. “Wait here. I’ll be right back.” He left her alone and returned to the desk. “Yes?”

Amanda rested her hands on her hips. The dress clung to her curves and showed too much cleavage, but she did her job and brought in customers. “What’s the deal?” she asked.

“What do you mean?” He raked his fingers through his hair. “What’s your beef?”

“She’s young.”

“She is.” He knew and couldn’t do much about it, but most of the girls who danced at the club were under twenty-five.

“She’s not dancer material.”

“Nope.” He could’ve told her that when Kelly first walked into the building.

“Yet you’re wasting your time on her.” She crooked her eyebrow again. “What’s gotten into you?"

He offered a grin. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

Mimi Takes Europe by Elizabeth Cooke #CozyMystery #Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Elizabeth Cooke will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

In this latest cozy mystery, Mimi, and her co-anchor, Nicole Marcel, on the Interview TV Show, TONIGHT, is at her peak of popularity in Paris. Charles Bleisante, who owns the TV Station, proposes a TV interview tour for the pair of certain cities on the continent.

The two, with Nicole’s lover, Detective Giscard Morency, are off, first to Barcelona, later to London. The interviews center on food: the cooking of a paella, in Spain; the braising of a Christmas goose in London, delicious episodes that attract a wide audience. However, certain nefarious incidents occur, in which Mimi is canine sleuth.

CNN–New York requests the co-anchors come to Manhattan for more interviews. There, Mimi helps solve a grisly murder that takes place in one of the highest billionaire luxury buildings in the world.

The resolution of this crime is revealed in Book Five of The Mimi Series: “MIMI TAKES MANHATTAN.”

Read an Excerpt

Detective Giscard Morency grew concerned. As lover of Nicole Marcel, he began to have a dull sense of dread toward one Charles Bleisante. He realized the extent of the entrepreneur’s interest in Nicole. It was not only professional. Oh no. It was much more personal.

Giscard knew the man had lustful feelings for his woman. He could understand it well, but it surely made him deeply anxious about the proposed TV Tour of Europe that Bleisante was proposing for Nicole.

The two – with Mimi – would be out of Paris – in grand hotels – at dinners – on planes shooting through the skies – in exotic places - in bedrooms?

Giscard determined to interrupt this pilgrimage. He would find a way. Perhaps, on the journey, Mimi with her petit nez noir, (little black nose,) would find a new felon for him to track. Obviously, Mimi and Giscard were linked together on several nefarious cases. It would not be at all untenable for the detective to enter the picture if a proper case should appear. It was not much to hope for, but hope he did!

“I’m not going to let you go off with him... alone,” he declared to Nicole.

“Oh, please,” was her reply. “I know him. He’s harmless.”

“Well, I know him too,” was Giscard’s strong rebuttal. “I know men...it’s in his eyes. He lusts for you.” Giscard made up his mind there and then to go wherever she went, whether Nicole approved of it or not!

Lyon’s Theorem of Seduction #MFRWsteam

The MFRW Steam hop is a monthly blog hop hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers. If you like your romance to sizzle, then read on. There’s lots of steamy, spicy experts coming your way.

Here's a bit from Lyon's Theorem of Seduction

Blurb:

TomCats is the hottest gay resort in Key West and the perfect place for Andrew Long to forget his cheating ex-boyfriend.

Sexy tomcat Lyon Nash enjoys his life running the resort he owns with a group of cat-shifters. He’s not looking for a mate, but the shy, uptight Andrew ignites a spark that his cat can’t ignore.

Captain Jack, the cruise director, is also attracted to Andrew, and he bets Lyon that he can seduce the new guest first.

Lyon puts his Theorem of Seduction to the test and wins the bet. Things heat up between him and Andrew. They have a magical, mutual connection, but their relationship goes south when Andrew finds out about the bet. Once again he’s been humiliated and he flies back to New York. At least he’s bringing back the stray cat he adopted, but can the feline help him forget the charming cad he left behind?

Excerpt

Andrew stood at the entrance and scanned the room for the sandy-haired man, but he didn’t see him. Maybe he should just go back to his cottage. He could sit on the veranda and read by the porch light. It would be so much easier than standing around like a kid in a candy store with no money. If he was honest with himself, he sucked at this kind of scene. Navigating through a crowded bar and trying to look like he belonged was something he’d never been good at. Always looking for potential landmines, he could never relax and just have a good time. If he had a drink in his hand, he’d worry about spilling it and giving someone an alcohol bath. Of course that was provided he could even get a drink. First he’d have to shove his way to the bar and try to catch the bartender’s attention over the heads of the more aggressive, intoxicated patrons.

Interfacing with his computer and books he could do. Mingling with other humans baffled him. Face it, Andrew. You will never be the life of a party. He sighed and turned on his heel, ready to make a quick exit before anyone even knew he’d been there. Too late. A stream of men poured through the door, and Andrew found himself swept along with the crowd. It seemed like fate wanted him to stay. What the hell, he could use a drink.

A wall of bodies bumped him from behind, pushing him firmly against the bar. There was nowhere to go, and he ended up standing between two occupied stools. Forget any concept of personal space. The man on his left looked him up and down and introduced himself. “First time in Key West?”

“Does it show?” Andrew said, raising his voice to be heard over the loud music.

“Nothing shows, that’s the problem.” His new friend, dressed in blue spandex shorts, grinned at him.

“What did I get myself into?” Andrew muttered half to himself.

“The land of free spirits.” An older man on his right laughed. “You’re not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy.”

That was for sure. Key West was nothing if not surreal, but Andrew didn’t know if he had it in him to be a free spirit. He might be better off changing his plans and booking a flight to Disney World. He’d never been, and he’d always wanted to see Epcot. The park was all about the celebration of human achievement, international culture, and technological advances. Right up his alley…

“Give it a couple days, you’ll fit right in.”

Fat chance. Andrew had never fit in anywhere. Growing up quirky and gay, he’d become used to hiding his true self. But wasn’t that part of the attraction of TomCats? Surrounded by gay men, there was no need to hide. Still, old habits died hard.

Andrew turned to respond to the silver-haired man and saw the bartender heading his way. Suddenly all thoughts of hiding vanished. The sexy, golden-haired god he’d visualized while masturbating now stood in front of him waiting for his drink order. This time the man’s wink was definitely meant for him. Those sexy lips turned up in a devastating grin as if the Adonis could read Andrew’s mind. Andrew swallowed hard and felt his face heat.

“Hey.” The sex god’s gaze did a slow crawl over Andrew’s body. “Didn’t I see you check in earlier?”

Andrew could not take his eyes off the silver rings in the man’s caramel-colored nipples. How had he missed them earlier? Speechless, he could only nod and blush harder.

“I’m Lyon, and you’re…”

“Andrew Long.”

“Is that so?” Lyon licked his lips. “What are you drinking, Andy?”

“I…uh…” What was it about this man that turned him into a stuttering idiot?

“Undecided, huh? I have just the thing for you. Specialty of the house, coming right up.”

Lyon turned away, and Andrew swore if he wasn’t pressed in on all sides he would have run back to the safety of his cottage. But being trapped here, he had no choice but to watch the muscles ripple under the tattoo on Lyon’s bare back. His long golden mane was pulled back with a thin leather strip, and the rings in his ears matched the ones in his nipples. Andrew’s cock did a slow climb to attention. He started fanning himself.

His older buddy on the right nudged him with an elbow. “Lyon is hot as hell. If you hook up later, I wouldn’t mind joining the party.”

Andrew’s eyes went wide. Is he talking about a sex trio? With three men?

“The more the merrier. Right?” His new bbf chuckled.

Not a chance in hell! Gary had often suggested they try a mĂ©nage Ă  trois, but dealing with one man at a time was complicated enough. Andrew was not emotionally equipped to handle adding a third party to their intimacy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The briny smell of the ocean tickled Andy’s nostrils, and the screeching of seagulls filled his ears. He and Lyon threw off their sandals, and the sand felt good beneath Andy’s bare feet. His body felt deliciously warm and achy. Sunburn or Lyon?
Andy savored the excitement building inside him. Walking along the dunes, they let the tide chase their toes, and Andy sighed in contentment. Lyon slipped his hand down Andy’s pants and kept it over his ass as if afraid he’d run at the first opportunity. Andy wasn’t going anywhere. He wanted this, wanted Lyon, and even if their connection was only for a night, he intended to go for it. What happened in Key West stayed in Key West. Hopefully he would have some great memories to take home with him.
It was a warm evening, and the tropical heat added to the fire blazing in his belly—a fire that could have melted the biggest snowstorm in upstate New York. When Lyon kissed him, he rose up on his toes, desperately wanting to be as close as possible. He wrapped his arms around Lyon’s neck and accepted his tongue eagerly. Big, warm palms gripped his ass, and Lyon’s steel-hard erection pressed against his.
“You feel so good. So hot. Your lips are so soft…” Lyon’s voice was deep and smooth as velvet. His gaze locked on Andy’s.
Instinctively, Andy knew what Lyon wanted, but he couldn’t go there. He wasn’t ready. Was he?
“I want them wrapped around my dick.” Those copper eyes, so full of passion, reflected the moonlight and the same blatant sexual hunger that Andy was feeling.
Just let yourself go, Andy…
Andy closed his eyes, listened to the sea, and let the gentle loll of the waves calm him into submission.
He sank to his knees on the sand and worked the zipper on Lyon’s pants. Lyon shoved them to his ankles and kicked them away. For a second Andy felt a bit humiliated because he’d complied so easily. Then he drank in the sight of Lyon, standing like a Greek God in the moonlight, his cock long and full in front of Andy’s face. The man was more beautiful than any man had a right to be. And he wants me. Andy reached out and grasped the back of Lyon’s muscular thighs, pulling him closer. Lyon’s scent flooded his nostrils, and he nuzzled his pubes, wanting more. The wiry light-brown bush tickled Andy’s nose as he breathed him in.
Anticipation made his mouth water. Andy felt like a kid opening his first present on Christmas morning. At last he took Lyon’s weeping dick in his mouth. Lyon hissed in a breath of air as Andy’s lips closed over him and Andy’s tongue swirled around the head of his cock.
One hand fondled Lyon’s balls while the other hand gripped the base of his shaft. He relaxed his throat muscles allowing Lyon’s dick to slide deeper. The cockhead hit the back of Andy’s throat, and he was rewarded by a deep moan from Lyon. Lyon’s balls tightened in his hand, and he knew the man was close. He didn’t want Lyon to hold back. He wanted to feel him come, to know that he had brought this gorgeous man satisfaction.
Andy coated a finger with saliva and pre-cum and reached back to tease Lyon’s hole. When he pressed inside, he took Lyon over the edge. The big man came hard. Andy gagged, but pulled back enough to drink down Lyon’s release.
After Lyon’s shudders subsided, he pulled Andy to his feet and kissed him soundly. “That was amazing, but you haven’t come yet. What do you say we take this home?”
There was no going back now. Andy smiled at him. “Lead the way.”
Chapter One
Jason Chastain
Jason came to in a whole world of pain. He stopped himself from letting out the grunts and moans he wanted to voice, instead clenching his fists as hard as he could in a silent attempt to release some of his agony, frustration and anger. No way did he want the fuckers who’d taken him to know he was conscious. Much better they believed he was still out cold and therefore no threat to them whatsoever.
In reality, he was very dangerous indeed. Particularly since acquiring his newfound… ability. He could be rid of his bindings, the black hood over his head and the gag stuffed into his mouth with the most miniscule amount of effort. All he’d have to do was phase through them. But that would show his hand in a major way, and the whole point of allowing himself to be abducted had been to get inside the group’s HQ, find out who they were, what they were up to and, more importantly, just what they planned to do with Kim and the ygrene—all without them suspecting he was anything other than some random bloke. To do that, he needed to stay calm and quiet. If the goons thought he was still out for the count, they’d talk, and it would only be a matter of time before someone let something slip, something Jason could use to his advantage.
Firstly, it’d come in handy to know how many people were around, what sort of room he was being held in, and whether he was ever left alone. With that information in his arsenal, he could start to formulate a plan.
He remained still, silent, keeping his breathing slow and deep, which had the double bonuses of making it appear he remained unconscious if there was anyone with him, and allowing him to hone his senses more easily. Obviously with the hood he couldn’t see a damn thing, but he could feel, hear and smell. The first thing he realised, to his immense relief, was that he was still fully clothed—including shoes. Thank God for that. That’ll certainly make getting home much easier, once I’m done here. He moved on to his other senses. To begin with, he didn’t pick up anything beyond the sound of his own breathing and heartbeat, and the musty stench of the hood itself, but he drew on all his training and experience to push past that and reach for what was beyond.
No human sounds—no breathing, shuffling, coughing, sniffing, talking. Which either meant he was alone, or with someone extremely quiet. No one’s that quiet. He suspected the former, leading him to believe he was in an incredibly secure room, likely part of a bigger complex. If he was in some ramshackle garage on an industrial estate somewhere, there’d be bods right there ensuring he didn’t break out through some weakness in the structure itself—if he could get out of his bonds, that was. If only they knew.
He risked a sigh. So much for someone letting something slip in my earshot. There’s no fucker here.
In the past, the idea of being caged, alone, in an incredibly secure room would have concerned him, made him long for the ramshackle garage and the bods—easy prey for someone with his background. But now, even a steel box couldn’t contain him. He hadn’t yet tested the theory, but he suspected that not even metres and metres of reinforced concrete would hold him hostage. Yes, it’d slow him down, and escaping it wouldn’t be the most pleasant of experiences, but it was probably achievable.
He turned his attention to smell. After the pongy hood and gag, most obvious were his own body odour and the tang of blood—also his own, he suspected—but otherwise, zilch. Nada. He frowned. What kind of room or building was so… sterile?
He took another deep, slow breath. Even the air itself seemed clean. Not the pure freshness one would get from being outside or next to an open window; more like from air conditioning. With that thought in mind, he listened harder and… yes, unless he was mistaken, there was the gentle, regular hum of a system which circulated air.
He frowned. So he was in some kind of sterile environment with air conditioning? A hospital, or lab of some kind? Despite his extremely low opinion of the muppets who’d fallen into his trap and swiped him from the Greenwich street outside Kim’s house, they clearly worked for someone with resources.
But the question was, did those resources extend to having eyes and ears of the technological kind on him? That would be a problem, because although he could phase his way out of here at the drop of a hat, if his escape was caught on video, that was proof of what he could do. And, even if it got out to the wider public and he somehow managed to say the footage had been made up, manipulated somehow… well, there was no smoke without fire, was there? He’d have something he’d never wanted, something he definitely didn’t want now: attention.
Riga just wants to mentor three young witches and go home. Doyle witch Jayce wouldn’t take help if it landed on her. But when a man is murdered in front of their eyes, these two must learn to work together. Because a dead man is the least of their worries… Jayce Bonheim loves magic and Doyle, California. But she and her small town have been paying a deadly price for the fairy gate she and her sisters can’t close. Now, a society of dark magicians has returned to town, a deadly winged monster has come through the gate, and an old friend has been murdered. And the new mentor who’s supposed to help Jayce and her sisters seems to have an agenda of her own…
It was supposed to be a simple training gig for Riga Hayworth, not a murder investigation. Still reeling from a tragic mistake in her past, she’s determined to stay retired. But the murder and the town’s magic seem tied together. Can Riga resist the lure of an investigation?
A thrilling and funny paranormal mystery, packed with magic, mystery, and murder. Perfect for fans of Mercy Thompson, Supernatural, and Charlaine Harris. Buy Unbound and start reading this page-turning witch mystery.
“A black lodge in Doyle? Don’t you think you could have led with that?” I had mad respect for Mrs. Steinberg, but honestly. She’d dropped that intel for maximum dramatic effect.
The old lady set down her e-cigarette. “Not a black lodge. The Black Lodge. The one from San Francisco that’s been causing us so much trouble.”
“How do you know?” Riga asked quietly.
The old lady reached into her black handbag on the table and pulled out another square business card. She flung it onto the stained tablecloth. “Because the cheeky devils introduced themselves.”
My sisters and I shared a look.
“I know,” Mrs. Steinberg said. “They walked up to me, bold as brass, and they... and they...”
“They what?” I prompted and glanced at Riga. Why had Mrs. Steinberg hired her? Riga didn’t look that tough. She couldn’t be more than five-six in her low-heeled boots. Her eyes were odd—a sort of browny-purply. What sort of magic did she have?
“They brought flowers.” Mrs. Steinberg bristled. “Irises. My favorite.”
I rolled my eyes. “That does sound intimidating.” Looking at the tablecloth, I grounded myself and extended my senses toward Riga. I felt power, cold and empty. And yes, I know empty doesn’t exactly sound powerful. But hers was the empty of space, vast and deadly and terrifying.
I looked up. Riga was watching me.
