The Last Birthday
At the turn of the century, I suspected my mother had Alzheimer’s disease. She'd become extremely forgetful, and argumentative, and she got lost walking around the same neighborhood that she'd lived in for fifty years. When she started calling me at work to complain about strange men or animals fighting in her basement, I took her to a specialist. Despite the suspicions, the diagnosis still came as a shock. With the doctor's words came the hard reality that mom was not going to get better.
Mom lived with my brother, but he worked long hours and she was on her own most of the time. When she broke her hip, it became obvious that she could no longer be left alone. My brother and I decided against a nursing home, so mom came to live with my family. My house has an in-law suite, and with everything mom needed on one floor, it was just easier to care for her.
Everyone pitched in with her care, even when mom stopped talking and became bedridden. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease, but we took one day at a time, and enjoyed the moments when mom still knew who we were and could interact with us. On her 82nd birthday she was still able to sit up and enjoy her birthday cake. As caregivers our world revolved around mom until she died in her sleep. Endings aren't easy, but now we cherish our memories—especially mom's last birthday.

Symbiotic Mates 6: Lane and the Lycans
Lane Kata is on a mission from hell. Spy on the wolf-shifters and report back to his vampire master. Things go horribly wrong when a bear decides to have the cat-shifter for dinner. Two lycans intervene, and Lane is sure he’ll end up as wolf kibble instead of bear meat, but Nicky Birch is a do-gooder wildlife enthusiast, and he’s determined to keep the lynx safe. His mate, Doug Wilder, agrees, but only until Nicky finds a wildlife sanctuary that will care for the cat.
Lane discovers that not all wolves are savages as he was led to believe. When he develops a crush on his captors, he can’t help shifting to his human form and jumping into their bed. The sex is great, but Lane knows there's no future for a cat and two dogs. He returns to the vampire Colony, but his master has already replaced him, and his days are numbered.
